Syracuse looks to mesh community with police in new initiative

A new initiative in Syracuse is working to get kids involved with the community with the help of one sport. Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh (I) announced that the Syracuse Police Athletic Leagues will be participating in the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ “Play Ball” initiative.

It’s a partnership with Major League Baseball and local organizations to get children to engage with the community through baseball, while bringing kids and law enforcement together in a non-law enforcement setting.

A clinic will take place at Burnet Park on September 19 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Registration is already open and officials are hoping at least 100 children will be involved.

“To be able to pair it up with the U.S. Conference of Mayors and bring in partners like Visit Syracuse and the Syracuse Mets really made it a home run. We’re excited to get started with the clinic and expect more to come after that,” said Walsh.

Walsh says this is the only planned baseball clinic, but the city will look to expand on similar programs with other sports in the near future.
