5-year-old girl awakens from coma after crash involving former Chiefs

A 5-year-old girl has awoken from a coma after she was injured in a Feb. 4 crash involving former Chiefs outside linebackers coach Britt Reid.

According to an update from a GoFundMe campaign covering her medical expenses, Ariel Young awoke Monday for the first time since she was hospitalized the same day of the crash. The update offers no other news on her condition.

Her GoFundMe page has raised $494,179 — well beyond its listed goal of $420,000.

The crash that injured Ariel and another 4-year-old child took place Thursday before Super Bowl 55, near Kansas City’s team facility. Per police reports, Britt Reid — son of Chiefs coach Andy Reid — crashed into two cars on the side of a highway entrance ramp. According to a search warrant application, Reid — who was not arrested at the scene and who has not been charged with a crime — admitted to police that he had two or three drinks prior to the crash, as well as prescription Adderall.

The timing of Reid’s exit from the Chiefs facility and the crash raises questions as to whether he was drinking in team facilities, a violation of the NFL’s alcohol policy.

Reports from Feb. 12 indicated Reid was “no longer an employee with the club.” Per ESPN’s Adam Schefter, he was placed on leave through the remainder of his contract with the team, which had since expired and was not renewed; he was not fired.
