Zogby draws crowd for MVILR talk on Iran

UTICA, N.Y. — A standing-room crowd of 115 residents attended a lecture by political
pollster John Zogby, who presented “Trust Is Down: Let’s Have an Election,” part of the
Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement Cultural Series in partnership with
Mohawk Valley Community College.

Zogby said the nation is entering the 2026 midterm elections at a time of declining trust
in government and growing voter dissatisfaction. He discussed the potential impact of
the Iran war, noting public opinion remains uncertain and could shift further if the conflict
continues.

He outlined advantages and challenges for both parties, saying Democrats may benefit
from historical midterm trends while Republicans retain strength on issues such as
immigration, crime and national security. Both parties, he said, face low public trust and
increasing frustration among voters.

Zogby highlighted dissatisfaction among younger voters, noting many Gen Z and
millennials feel disconnected from both parties and frustrated by partisan gridlock and a
lack of solutions on key issues. He said the generational divide is reshaping politics and
suggested it may be time for older leaders to step aside to allow younger voices to lead.

He also pointed to ideological divisions, saying a segment of Republican populism
seeks to preserve a more traditional, white, European-rooted vision of the country,
which he said contrasts with changing demographics. Zogby added that the White
House has at times moved key issues through the courts rather than Congress,
increasing reliance on Supreme Court decisions.

Zogby placed the election within a broader global context, citing challenges including
inflation, migration, health care, wealth inequality, cybersecurity and artificial
intelligence.
