National Yo-Yo Champion Hunter “ElectricPlus” Willis to Visit Roots & Wings Academy

UTICA, N.Y. — Nationally recognized youth yo-yo champion, performer and online content creator Hunter “ElectricPlus” Willis of Maryland will visit the Roots & Wings Academy Summer Program at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 9, at the Carol L. Crooms BECA Center, 1105 Park Ave., Utica.

Willis, 10, won the 2024 U.S. National Yo-Yo Contest Sport Division Championship (9 & Under) before advancing to the Championship Division, where he now competes against many of the world’s top players. A sponsored member of the W1LD 2030 Team, he performs under the name ElectricPlus and creates YouTube and social media content featuring yo-yo tutorials, trick demonstrations and competition highlights that are helping introduce a new generation to modern competitive yo-yoing.

During his visit, Hunter will demonstrate advanced yo-yo techniques, discuss what he has learned through national competition and encourage campers to pursue their goals through dedication, practice and perseverance.

“We are excited to welcome Hunter Willis to the Roots & Wings Academy because he shows our campers that greatness can begin at any age,” said Tina Tanner, program coordinator for the Roots & Wings Academy. “Hunter’s visit will encourage our students to dream big, practice with purpose and discover talents they never knew they had.”

“His story of commitment, perseverance and believing in yourself is exactly the type of inspiration we want our young people to experience,” said Teoka Muhammad, co-founder of the Carol L. Crooms BECA Center. “We know our campers will leave motivated to try new things, work hard and never give up on their dreams.”

The Carol L. Crooms BECA Center is a Utica nonprofit that provides educational enrichment, mentoring and leadership opportunities for youth and families.
