Wrestling Wire: July 2, 2026 — News, AEW Dynamite Recap & Rumors
Forbidden Door fallout ruled Dynamite, TNA’s roster shakeup claimed another name, and the SummerSlam rumor mill is heating up. Here’s the full breakdown.

News
Big Bill Heading Back to WWE, Enzo Amore Reunion on the Horizon
The biggest roster news of the week broke just before Dynamite went on the air.
According to Fightful Select, Big Bill, whose deal is coming up over the next week, has given notice to AEW that he’s departing the company.
This paves the way for a WWE reunion with his former tag team partner Enzo Amore, with Fightful saying plans call for WWE to sign Amore as well.
At least as of mid-June, Amore was not officially signed yet because WWE was waiting for Big Bill to be contractually free and clear.
Bill, known to WWE fans as Big Cass, spent four years in AEW and had some genuine highlights on his run, most notably his tag team title reign.
He enjoyed championship success, capturing the AEW World Tag Team Championship alongside Ricky Starks, who now competes in WWE as Ricky Saints.
He has not wrestled on AEW TV since February.
At the moment, it is unknown whether Amore and Bill will be brought back to NXT, or if they will make their return on the main roster.
It is a move that feels like the right time for all parties involved, and fans who were around for the mid-2010s NXT golden era are going to have opinions about this one.
Eric Young Released by TNA, WWE Return Expected
TNA’s roster shakeup continued in a big way on July 1.
TNA Wrestling issued a press release announcing the contractual release of Eric Young, effective immediately.
Fightful Select confirmed that, like several other recent TNA departures, Young asked for his release before it was granted.
While Young had largely worked without a contract for TNA since returning in 2023, it was noted that he had recently signed a short-term deal with the promotion, necessitating a formal release.
As for what comes next, all signs point to WWE.
The report noted that Young has always maintained a good relationship with Triple H, and WWE sources have said the door is open for his return.
The announcement adds Young to a growing list of TNA departures that includes Tommy Dreamer, Sami Callihan, Steve Maclin, Tessa Blanchard, Myla Grace, and others.
EY is a cornerstone of TNA’s entire history, a two-time world champion who’s been with the company across multiple stints going back to 2004. Seeing him go is genuinely the end of an era for that promotion.
NWA Announces Competition Series “Into the Fire”
The National Wrestling Alliance made a surprise announcement this week on a different front entirely.
NWA National Promoter Bryan Idol revealed that NWA will be debuting a new television show on Comet TV titled “Into the Fire
Mike Santana also on his way out. After dropping the TNA World Championship to Nic Nemeth at Slammiversary, Wrestling Inc reports Santana will skip this week’s TV tapings and his deal is expected to lapse within days. Like Young, he’s widely expected to land in WWE.
El Hijo del Vikingo hurt in NXT tapings. Wrestling Inc reports the AAA Latin American Champion suffered an injury while preparing for a match during this week’s NXT tapings. No word yet on severity or how much time he might miss.
What Happened on Last Night’s AEW Dynamite
Dynamite aired live from Viejas Arena in San Diego and spent the entire show dealing with fallout from Sunday’s Forbidden Door pay-per-view.
MJF survives Mark Briscoe, kicks out of the Jay Driller for the first time ever. Briscoe earned his shot after his team’s win in Forbidden Door’s steel cage match, and he wasted no time cashing it in, opening the show against MJF in a brutal, weapons-heavy match. Briscoe connected with an avalanche attempt off the top rope that MJF escaped, then dropped MJF with a water wheel drop for a near-fall of his own. Briscoe finally landed the Jay Driller flush, the first time in the finisher’s history that MJF failed to kick out of it. It wasn’t enough. MJF fought back to the ropes, sent Briscoe into the corner, and spiked him with the Heat Seeker for the pin, retaining the AEW World Championship. MJF didn’t stop there. He slid the Dynamite Diamond Ring onto his hand and struck Briscoe with it after the bell, and when officials tried to pull him off, he shoved through them to go after Briscoe again. Kenny Omega ran down to make the save, and the two brawled up the ramp. Omega then challenged MJF to a title match on the spot; MJF refused, but offered a compromise: a match next week at Beach Break, on the condition that if Omega loses, he can never challenge for the AEW World Championship again — the same stipulation that ended Hangman Adam Page’s title chase. Omega accepted.
Hikaru Shida wins the inaugural Survival of the Fittest to become TBS Champion. Six women who’d each qualified over the past month — Shida, Persephone, Kris Statlander, Harley Cameron, Queen Aminata, and Maika — competed in an elimination-style match for the vacant title after Willow Nightingale was forced to relinquish it. Shida came out on top to become the new champion, capping off a month-long qualifying tournament.
Kevin Knight retains, Darby Allin lays down a challenge. Knight beat Lio Rush by pinfall with the Crash Landing to hold onto the TNT Championship. Darby Allin came out immediately afterward to demand a title shot of his own, warning that if Knight ducks him, the tension from Forbidden Door will only get worse. Don Callis interrupted to accuse Allin of crossing a line from wrestler to criminal at the pay-per-view.
Will Ospreay officially joins the Death Riders. Fresh off winning the Owen Hart Cup over Swerve Strickland at Forbidden Door, Ospreay opened the show backstage saying he finally felt like he could breathe. Jon Moxley walked in, told Ospreay how proud he was of him, and handed him a Death Riders patch on camera, making the alliance official. Ospreay and Moxley then teamed up for a win over The Swirl (Lee Johnson and Blake Christian) with Jay Lethal in their corner.
Jay White returns and calls out Will Ospreay. White made his first in-ring return since helping Adam Copeland and Christian Cage retain the AEW World Tag Team Championships at Forbidden Door. He addressed the crowd for the first time in months, said a lot has changed in AEW since he left, called Ospreay a fraud, and challenged David Finlay’s Gun Club to a showdown with his own group against The Dogs.
Andrade El Idolo’s split from the Don Callis Family turns violent. Andrade came to the ring to declare he was done with the group and wants a shot at the AEW World Title. The Don Callis Family answered by jumping him, with Brian Cage delivering a Drill Claw to punctuate the beatdown.
From WhatCulture Wrestling: their coverage this week also flagged that AEW’s Jack Perry is technically out of contract with negotiations still ongoing, and that Tony Khan has publicly addressed questions about whether AEW might look at buying TNA outright — both storylines worth watching as the summer goes on.
Rumors & Speculation
Everything below is unconfirmed. Treat it as rumor mill chatter, not reported fact.
- On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer indicated WWE’s long-standing plan is reportedly still to build toward a Cody Rhodes vs. CM Punk match for the Undisputed WWE Championship, which raises questions about how long Sami Zayn’s newly won title reign is actually meant to last.
- Meltzer has also speculated that WWE views this stretch as a critical window for AEW and may be deliberately counter-programming shows to pressure the promotion’s ratings.
- Chris Jericho’s name is circulating again in WWE return talk. Nothing has been confirmed, and even Drew McIntyre’s recent comments on the subject stopped short of confirming anything is imminent.
