Wrestling News: Zayn Reign, ESPN Influence & TNA Upheaval
Top Stories – July 4, 2026
Sami Zayn’s Championship Reign Shrouded in Secrecy
The biggest story in wrestling right now is Sami Zayn’s shock capture of the Undisputed WWE Championship at Night of Champions on June 27, defeating Cody Rhodes and GUNTHER in a triple threat. What elevates this beyond a routine title change is the extraordinary secrecy surrounding the decision. Per reporting from WrestleVotes via Fightful Select, the title change was kept on a strict “need-to-know” basis — so tightly that WWE’s own marketing department had not received instructions to update SummerSlam promotional materials by July 1, and belt nameplate staff had received no advance notice. Employees reportedly fear that if this level of compartmentalization becomes standard, it will hamper day-to-day operations. (Wrestling Inc.)
Zayn made his first televised appearance as champion on the July 3 SmackDown, where Cody Rhodes earned a title shot for the July 6 Raw in Chicago after defeating Jey Uso in a number-one contender’s match. (Fightful)
ESPN Is Actively Shaping WWE Creative
The day’s most consequential business story: ESPN is reportedly an active behind-the-scenes WWE partner and pushed Night of Champions to six matches to strengthen its simulcast and drive “ESPN Unlimited” subscriptions. WWE PLEs moved exclusively to ESPN’s streaming service in 2026, and this broadcaster influence on card composition is expected to continue through fall 2026. This represents a structural shift in how WWE builds its shows. (PWTorch)
TNA in Creative Transition: Eric Young Out, Road Dogg Expected In
Eric Young was released by TNA on July 1 and issued a public statement. Backstage reports indicate that Brian “Road Dogg” James is expected to join TNA creative — a move reportedly supported internally and by JBL and Eric Bischoff. However, F4WOnline notes Road Dogg has not officially signed and was absent from the July Albany tapings; current creative is led by Hunter Johnson (Delirious) and Eric Tompkins. (Fightful, Wrestling Inc., F4WOnline)
WWE ID Program Faces “Scabwork” Allegations
Independent promotion PRODUCE Wrestling pulled talent Marcus Mathers and Chazz “Starboy” Hall from events due to WWE ID commitments. Promoter Orange Crush / Adam Abdalla publicly alleged talent were “conned into doing scabwork” and forced to cancel bookings to travel to Florida for Evolve tapings. This is a rare critical counter-narrative to WWE’s developmental PR. (Fightful, F4WOnline)
Injury Report
Multiple marquee stars are sidelined: Kevin Owens successfully underwent neck surgery; Mark Briscoe suffered an injury following AEW Dynamite; Logan Paul, Adam Cole, and Kota Ibushi remain in recovery. These absences are reshaping SummerSlam and AEW cards. (Fightful, F4WOnline)
McMahon Legal Saga Continues
Janel Grant released a July 2 statement alleging that graphic evidence was produced and summarized to WWE’s Board during the 2022 Vince McMahon investigation without her knowledge or consent. Separately, voice memos of Ari Emanuel offering McMahon legal assistance in 2022 were made public via the shareholders’ lawsuit, which was moved to binding arbitration. All allegations remain within active or arbitrated proceedings. (Fightful)
Mick Foley Exits WWE Legends Deal
Mick Foley confirmed his WWE Legends deal has expired, stating he declined to renew over the company’s ties to Donald Trump. He plans merchandise work with AEW and other promotions. (Fightful)
EPISODE REVIEW
Episode Reviews: SmackDown Returns to Two Hours, Dynamite Sets Up Omega vs. MJF
Episode Reviews – July 1–3, 2026
WWE SmackDown (July 3 | Boardwalk Hall, Atlantic City)
SmackDown marked a significant format change this week, returning to a two-hour runtime after running three hours since the start of 2026. The episode was taped June 29 and centered on Sami Zayn’s first appearance as Undisputed WWE Champion.
Key Moments:
-
Sami Zayn opened the show addressing his championship win. In a memorable promo, he said he could be “petty” toward fans who turned their backs on him, but chose not to because he’s a “good guy.” Cody Rhodes and Jey Uso interrupted, leading to Adam Pearce booking a number-one contender’s match.
-
Cody Rhodes defeated Jey Uso to earn a WWE Championship match on the July 6 Raw in Chicago.
-
Rey Fenix (c) retained the AAA Cruiserweight Title vs. El Hijo del Vikingo in a fast-paced match praised by reviewers.
-
Lainey Reid defeated Brie Bella in what was noted as Bella’s first singles match in eight years.
-
Women’s Six-Person Tag: The Baddies defeated a team including Charlotte Flair and Tiffany Stratton. Note: Sources conflict on the third member — Fightful’s detailed recap lists Alexa Bliss, while PWTorch and Wrestling Inc. list Chelsea Green. We’re flagging this discrepancy rather than picking one.
Verdict: The two-hour return was welcomed, though reviewers at Wrestling Inc. criticized the women’s division booking as hard to follow and called repeated Danhausen/Miz/Kit Wilson segments “boring.” The Zayn promo and Rhodes/Uso match were the clear highlights. (Wrestling Inc., Fightful)
AEW Dynamite (July 1 | San Diego)
MJF retained the AEW World Championship over Mark Briscoe in a 19-minute match. After the bell, MJF struck Briscoe with the Dynamite Diamond Ring — prompting Kenny Omega to intervene. Omega then gambled his future title contention to earn a shot at MJF the following week on Dynamite Beach Break (July 8). Hikaru Shida won the Survival of the Fittest match to become the new TBS Champion. (PWTorch)

WWE NXT (June 30 | The CW)
New Women’s Champion Kendal Grey addressed the division. Kelani Jordan defeated Tatum Paxley, after which Nikki Blackheart made her TV debut by attacking Paxley. The Vanity Project retained the NXT Tag Team Titles. Viewership was a concern: the episode averaged 592,000 viewers — an 11% weekly decline — with the 18-49 demo dropping 36%, partly attributed to FIFA World Cup competition. (Fightful, Wrestling Inc.)

WRESTLER PROFILE
Where Are They Now: Booker T and the Reality of Wrestling
Where Are They Now: Booker T
“Can you dig it, sucka?” — For nearly two decades, those five words were the battle cry of one of professional wrestling’s most charismatic and decorated champions. Today, Booker T channels that same energy not into the ring, but into shaping the next generation of wrestling stars through his Houston-based Reality of Wrestling (ROW) school.
The Legend
Booker T (born Booker Tio Huffman Jr.) rose to prominence in WCW during the late 1990s, becoming a five-time WCW World Heavyweight Champion and one of the most beloved figures of the Monday Night Wars era. His partnership with Stevie Ray as Harlem Heat produced one of tag team wrestling’s most celebrated runs, capturing the WCW Tag Team Titles a record ten times.
When WWE purchased WCW in 2001, Booker T was central to the Invasion angle — one of the most anticipated (and debated) storylines in wrestling history. He went on to win the WWE World Heavyweight Championship and the King of the Ring tournament, cementing his status as a main-event player in WWE. His memorable 2005 feud with Kurt Angle — complete with the unforgettable “Best of Seven” series — remains a fan favorite. He was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2013, and again in 2019 as part of Harlem Heat.
The School: Reality of Wrestling
In 2005 — the same year he was still competing at the highest level — Booker T founded Reality of Wrestling in the Houston/Texas City, Texas area, co-run with his wife Sharmell Huffman and producer Kevin Bernhardt. His vision was to continue the legacy of the historic Houston Wrestling territory while building a modern pipeline for the next generation.
ROW runs tiered programming:
-
ROW Up — entry-level training for new students
-
Glory — intermediate development
-
Platinum — the flagship showcase, held at the Walker Texas Lawyer Arena in Texas City
In October 2024, ROW was named one of the inaugural affiliates of the WWE ID developmental program — a milestone Booker T described as the culmination of nearly two decades of work. (Wrestling Inc.)
The Pipeline: Notable Trainees
The proof is in the results. ROW has produced an impressive roster of talent now competing at the highest levels:
| Trainee | Achievement |
|---|---|
| Jey Uso | First ROW student to win a WWE world title — World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 41 (April 2025) |
| Roxanne Perez | Four-time WWE champion; trained from age 16; current NXT Women’s Champion |
| Maya World | Reached the Owen Hart Foundation Women’s Tournament final at AEW Forbidden Door 2026 |
| Rok-C | Former ROW Diamonds Champion and former ROH Women’s World Champion |
| Bryan Keith | Active AEW competitor |
| Zilla Fatu | Son of Umaga; joined ROW in 2022; expected to sign with WWE |
| Sherilyn Guerrero | Daughter of Eddie Guerrero; began training at ROW in October 2025 |
Booker T’s training philosophy centers on nuance: “What occurs before and after a move.” He emphasizes that a wrestler’s losses should be as impactful as their wins — so they are prepared when the spotlight arrives. He has compared his talent-development eye to the ability to create an “illusion” of size and presence, likening Roxanne Perez’s development to that of Shawn Michaels. (Wrestling Inc.)
Today: Still in the Game
Beyond ROW, Booker T remains publicly active as a color commentator for WWE NXT, bringing his championship pedigree and sharp perspective on wrestling psychology to every broadcast. He celebrated Jey Uso’s WrestleMania 41 title win as a proud mentor moment, and continues to champion Maya World’s rise in AEW. (Wrestling Inc.)
A Note on Accountability
In 2024, former ROW talent Raychell Rose alleged the promotion failed to provide promised security amid a stalking situation, leading to her firing and multiple departures. Booker T and representatives maintained the company is “strict but fair.” We present this alongside the legacy for a complete picture. (Fightful)
From five-time WCW champion to Hall of Famer to wrestling school founder — Booker T’s second act may prove as impactful as his first. Can you dig it?
