Why Donald Trump Can’t Be Trusted to Negotiate a Fair Deal for Ukraine

By David LaGuerre –

Donald Trump has boasted about settling the Ukraine conflict in an instant, yet his history paints a very different picture. With close ties to Vladimir Putin, a penchant for authoritarian rhetoric, and a track record of provocative proposals—from annexing Greenland to reclaiming the Panama Canal—Trump’s approach to international diplomacy raises serious doubts about his commitment to democracy and the rule of law. This blog post examines the key reasons why Trump cannot be trusted to negotiate a fair deal for Ukraine, drawing from firsthand quotes and analyses by respected political influencers.

Trump’s Troubling Relationship with Vladimir Putin

Trump’s interactions with Russian President Vladimir Putin have sparked controversy since his first term. His public praise for Putin has not only drawn bipartisan criticism in the United States but has also fueled worries that his policies favor Russian interests over democratic ideals.

Favoring a “Strong Leader” Over Democratic Accountability

Trump has repeatedly described Putin as a “strong leader” while showing reluctance to hold him accountable. At the 2018 Helsinki summit, Trump stated,
“President Putin says it’s not Russia. I don’t see any reason why it would be.”
This remark, which contradicted U.S. intelligence findings, was widely interpreted as prioritizing personal rapport over national security. Critics argue that such deference aligns too closely with Russian narratives, undermining Ukraine’s fight for sovereignty.

Soft Stance on Ukraine

In addition to his praise for Putin, Trump’s approach to Ukraine has been marked by evident skepticism. He has questioned the need for robust U.S. military assistance, suggesting that Ukraine should strike a deal with Russia—even if that action compromises Ukrainian territory. Observers note that this stance echoes Russian strategies aimed at weakening Ukraine’s resolve and reducing Western influence in the region.

Echoing Disinformation

Trump’s remarks have sometimes mirrored Russian disinformation. For example, by crudely labeling Ukraine’s democratically elected president as a “dictator,” Trump effectively delegitimized Ukrainian leadership—a claim that conveniently supports Kremlin narratives. Such rhetoric casts doubt on his ability to act in Ukraine’s best interests.

Authoritarian Tendencies and Admiration for Strongmen

A recurring theme in Trump’s political career is his attraction to authoritarian models of leadership. His rhetoric and actions have often signaled a willingness to erode democratic norms in favor of consolidating power.

Attacks on Democratic Institutions

Trump’s repeated assertions—such as his unfounded claims of widespread voter fraud after the 2020 election—exemplify a broader strategy of delegitimizing established democratic institutions. Such behavior is reminiscent of authoritarian tactics aimed at undermining the checks and balances critical for a healthy democracy. As one political commentator noted, “When a leader attacks the integrity of the electoral process, he hurts the very fabric of our democracy” .

Embracing Authoritarian Rhetoric

Trump’s admiration for other autocrats is evident in his praise for leaders such as Putin, Xi Jinping, and Kim Jong-un. By celebrating their decisiveness and alleged control, he sends a clear message: strength is valued over transparency and democratic debate. This perspective endangers the global order that relies on respect for international law and sovereign rights.

The Weaponization of Media

Trump’s relentless attacks on the press, labeling them as “fake news” and the “enemy of the people,” bear a striking resemblance to tactics used by authoritarian regimes to control public discourse. This approach not only stifles criticism but also erodes public trust—a cornerstone of democratic society.

Controversial Foreign Policy Ideas: More Than Rhetoric

Trump’s foreign policy proposals have repeatedly crossed the line from provocative rhetoric to potentially destabilizing actions, reflecting an approach that prioritizes U.S. dominance over international norms.

Annexing Greenland: A “Strategic” Misstep

In 2019, Trump suggested that the United States should purchase Greenland from Denmark, calling it a “large real estate deal” that would boost U.S. strategic interests. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen sharply dismissed the idea, stating, “Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders.” This proposal, instead of fostering cooperation, threatened to disrupt long-held international relationships and treaty obligations.

Reclaiming the Panama Canal

Trump has also floated the idea of “taking back” the Panama Canal. He argued that because the canal is vital for U.S. commerce and military reach, it should be under American control again. Such a proposal ignores existing international agreements and risks igniting conflicts with Panama, not to mention undermining U.S. credibility on the global stage.

Making Canada the 51st State

Perhaps the most outlandish of Trump’s suggestions has been the notion that Canada should become the 51st state. Trump even ridiculed Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in this context, referring to him as the “governor” of Canada. While many saw these remarks as nothing more than political banter, they underscore a troubling disregard for the sovereignty of allied nations.

Parallels with Putin’s Leadership Style

The similarities between Trump’s approach and that of Vladimir Putin are both striking and concerning. Both leaders have employed methods that concentrate power, manipulate public opinion, and disregard international norms.

Centralization of Power

Both Trump and Putin have consistently worked to consolidate power by weakening independent institutions and surrounding themselves with loyalists. This centralization not only diminishes accountability but also increases the chances of decisions being made based on personal loyalty rather than national interest.

Scapegoating and Fear-Based Messaging

Using fear and the scapegoating of minorities or political opponents is a tactic common to both leaders. This approach diverts attention from policy failings and stokes division within society, endangering the social fabric essential to democratic governance.

Media as a Casualty

Trump’s repeated insults hurled at the media resonate with Putin’s strategies to control the narrative. Both see critical media scrutiny as a threat to their power, leading them to dismiss dissent and manipulate information for personal gain.

A Risk to Ukraine and Democratic Values

Donald Trump’s record makes it abundantly clear that he is not the mediator Ukraine needs. His overt deference to Putin, along with authoritarian tendencies and radically provocative foreign policy ideas, indicates that any negotiation he leads would hardly favor Ukraine’s sovereignty or democratic aspirations.

It is essential for those who believe in democracy, the rule of law, and international cooperation to critically assess the justifications for endorsing leaders like Trump for delicate peace processes. Only by upholding tried-and-true democratic principles can the global community ensure that Ukraine receives the fair treatment it deserves—one that affirms its right to self-determination against external coercion.

Call to Action: Let us stand for a future where international disputes are settled by leaders committed to fairness, transparency, and the respect for international laws. Share this post to spark informed discussions and demand accountability in our political landscape.
