Weekend Box Office: Other Mommy Wins, Social Reckoning Stumbles—What’s Next?

Other Mommy won the October 9–11 box office weekend, while The Social Reckoning suffered a disappointing debut and Digger continued to struggle. The next contest brings Street Fighter, Whalefall and Sense and Sensibility into theaters, with the video-game adaptation the early favorite to take first place.

This recap covers the Friday-through-Sunday domestic weekend, with results checked through Monday, October 12. “Domestic” means the United States and Canada. Monday’s holiday ticket sales are not included in the three-day ranking below.

The weekend box office leaders

Rank Film Domestic weekend gross
1 Other Mommy $27.81 million
2 Verity $12.01 million
3 Resident Evil $8.56 million
4 Heart of the Beast $7.44 million
5 The Social Reckoning $5.02 million
6 Forgotten Island $4.70 million
7 Primetime $4.01 million
8 Digger $3.20 million
9 The Odyssey $2.15 million
10 Angel and the Badman $2.12 million

Figures rounded to two decimal places from The Numbers’ dated weekend chart, cross-checked against Box Office Mojo’s estimate-versus-actual chart. Subsequent reporting can revise totals.

Updated reporting puts Other Mommy at $27.81 million, above Sunday’s $27.5 million estimate. The Social Reckoning moved in the opposite direction, from an estimated $5.5 million to about $5.02 million. The Odyssey also finished just ahead of Angel and the Badman, reversing their positions in some early lists.

The clear winner: Other Mommy

Universal’s horror release took the largest opening of the weekend. Deadline’s October 7 preview had anticipated roughly $20 million and reported a $19 million net production budget. The result comfortably exceeded that forecast.

That makes it an opening-weekend winner, but not a film whose final profitability can already be declared. Ticket revenue is shared with theaters; production spending is separate from marketing and distribution costs. Comparing the full gross directly with the budget does not produce a studio’s profit.

The warning sign is audience response. Boxoffice Pro’s Sunday recap reported a D+ CinemaScore. A strong opening and weak audience grade can coexist: advertising may sell the first ticket, while reactions influence whether the next group shows up.

Our assessment: Other Mommy won the opening battle. Its second weekend will test whether that initial turnout can become a durable run.

The disappointments: The Social Reckoning and Digger

The Social Reckoning landed fifth. Deadline’s advance forecast was around $8 million, with production spending reported in the $30 million–$42 million range before worldwide advertising. Its roughly $5 million domestic start fell below that expectation.

Aaron Sorkin’s film therefore belongs among the weekend’s underperformers. That judgment concerns its launch relative to expectations; it is not a claim that its final losses are known. Overseas revenue and later releases still matter.

Digger’s difficulty is different. It was already a holdover, and The Numbers reports a 60% weekend decline. Verity dropped 63%, despite remaining in second place. Rank alone can hide weakening demand: a movie may finish high on the chart while losing a large share of its opening audience.

For our forecast, those declines create more concern than the smaller drops of films beneath them. Repeating a steep fall would leave both with less room to compete against the new arrivals.

The quieter winners among the holdovers

The Numbers reports declines of about 32% for both Resident Evil and Heart of the Beast, and 35% for Forgotten Island. These were steadier performances than Verity’s and Digger’s. Resident Evil remained third in its fourth weekend.

The Odyssey rose 65% on the dated chart, while the limited release Fjord averaged approximately $32,000 in each of four theaters. These figures describe different kinds of strength: a renewed holdover and a concentrated specialty opening.

A four-theater launch should not be judged by the same total-dollar standard as a nationwide release. Conversely, a strong specialty average does not guarantee that a film will perform equally well after expansion. Our “winners” designation here describes momentum and audience concentration, rather than a settled financial verdict.

What opens October 16–18?

The coming weekend’s three prominent new releases offer action, survival suspense and period romance. Boxoffice Pro’s September preview describes Street Fighter as a new adaptation of the fighting-game franchise, Whalefall as a diver’s struggle to survive inside a whale, and Sense and Sensibility as a new Jane Austen adaptation.

Their national release date is October 16. That does not confirm a booking at every Mohawk Valley theater. Check the individual cinema’s current listings before making plans.

The published forecasts—and our prediction

Boxoffice Pro’s October 9 article, using a table labeled as of October 2, gives these domestic opening ranges:

New release Published opening range Our assessment
Street Fighter $25 million–$35 million Favorite for first place
Whalefall $10 million–$15 million Potential challenger for second
Sense and Sensibility $8 million–$12 million Most uncertain of the three

These are tracking ranges, not completed sales. Boxoffice Pro’s October 11 recap continued to cite $25 million–$35 million for Street Fighter. However, Box Office Theory’s October 2 forecast, reflecting October 1 tracking, put Sense and Sensibility lower, at $3.5 million–$7.5 million. That disagreement is important.

Our forecast: Street Fighter takes the crown, with about $30 million as a working midpoint rather than a firm prediction. Whalefall and Other Mommy are the likeliest contenders for the next two positions, but their order is uncertain.

To show the arithmetic behind that uncertainty, a hypothetical 50%–65% second-weekend drop would leave Other Mommy with about $9.7 million–$13.9 million. This is our scenario calculation using its opening gross, not published tracking. It overlaps Whalefall’s forecast range, making second place a closer contest than first.

Projected winners and films at risk

Street Fighter is our projected ranking winner. Whalefall could be a relative winner if it reaches the upper end of its published range. Neither outcome alone establishes profitability without reliable costs and the full revenue picture.

Sense and Sensibility is the biggest uncertainty. An opening below $8 million would miss Boxoffice Pro’s range but could still fit Box Office Theory’s forecast. It would be misleading to label every outcome in that gap a surprise failure.

Among holdovers, our risk watch remains on Digger, The Social Reckoning and Verity. They enter the next frame with either a weak debut or a steep recent decline. Our expectation is further erosion, although better audience response or changes in theater availability could alter that trajectory.

The result to watch most closely is Other Mommy’s percentage drop. If it retains more of its opening audience than our scenario assumes, it could outperform Whalefall. If it falls harder, the new survival thriller would have a clearer path to second.
