Wallkill Fatal Crash Kills 18-Year-Old Passenger on Route 17
State Police say a Ford struck the rear of a Mack truck near Exit 120 as investigators work to determine what caused the deadly collision.
WALLKILL, N.Y. — A Wallkill fatal crash on Route 17 left an 18-year-old Ossining man dead Monday morning and another person injured, according to New York State Police. Investigators are now asking anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward. (New York State Police)
The two-vehicle crash happened at about 6:55 a.m. Monday, Aug. 31, on State Route 17 westbound near Exit 120 in the Town of Wallkill, Orange County. Troopers from the Middletown and Greenville barracks responded. (New York State Police)
What State Police Say Happened
According to the preliminary investigation, a 2019 Ford was traveling west on Route 17 while a 2025 Mack truck was merging into the westbound lanes from the right shoulder. (New York State Police)
State Police said the Ford moved from the left lane into the right lane and struck the rear of the Mack truck.
Why the Ford changed lanes remains a central unanswered question. Police described the reason for the movement as “still under investigation.” (New York State Police)

18-Year-Old Passenger Killed
Troopers who arrived at the crash found a passenger in the Ford dead at the scene.
State Police identified him as Kevin C. Zhagui-Morocho, 18, of Ossining. (New York State Police)

The driver of the Ford was identified by police as Jorge A. Jarama-Barreto, 28, of Ossining. He was taken to Garnet Health Medical Center with injuries that authorities described as non-life-threatening. (New York State Police)
Mack Truck Driver Was Not Injured
The Mack truck driver was identified as Chad S. Rannels, 50, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The basic sequence reported by State Police was:
- The Ford was traveling west on Route 17.
- The Mack truck was merging from the right shoulder.
- The Ford moved from the left lane toward the right lane.
- The Ford then struck the rear of the truck.

Collision reconstruction investigators typically examine the physical evidence surrounding a crash to help establish how the vehicles moved before and during a collision. In this case, State Police have not yet released a final determination about why the Ford moved from the left lane to the right.
That means conclusions about fault or the cause of the Wallkill fatal crash would be premature based on the information currently available.
