                                                  JUNETEENTH

Juneteenth is celebrated annually on June 19th.  The holiday’s name is a combination of the words “June” and “nineteenth..”  It commemorates the day news of the Emancipation Proclamation (and their subsequent freedom.” From chattel slavery)  reached enslaved people in Galveston, Texas on June 19 1865, three years after President Abraham Lincoln had issued the proclamation.   It is considered the longest-running holiday in African American and Black communities, and was often observed with community celebrations on the third Saturday in June.  Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021` after the U. S. congress passed the Juneteenth Independence Day Act.

  “LISTEN UP”

January brought a new administration to Washingaton, D.C., headed by President Trump, who immediately signed a slew of damaging executive orders.  Some of these orders included:

Moving to end birthright citizenship guaranteed by the Constitution.

Barring asylum for refugee seekers.

Terminating DEI programs across the government.

Removing the protections for transgender people  in federal prisons.

Eliminating environmental justice programs that [protect low income communities from pollution.

So how do we – as individuals and NAACP members and a nation respond to this daily deluge of horrific news?  We respond by being ‘ALL IN’ on our commitment to fighting for racial justice and human rights , when things get tough we get going.

WE NEED YOU, YOU SHOULD NOT SIT ON THE SIDELINES AND WATCH ISSUES PERTINENT TO YOUR COMMUNITY PASS YOU BY, YOU ARE EXPECTED TO ADVOCATE FOR CRIMINAL AND JUENILE JUSTICE, ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, EDUCATION AND HEALTH AND VOTER ISSUES IN THE COMMUNITY!

The Youth Council was initiated in 1935 by executive secretary Walter White.  White realized the need  for a specific branch of the NAACP for the younger generation.  At the time the youth were considered members of the main adult branches, yet many of them had different opinions than the older generation.

The NAACP has a rich history in civil rights and organizing.  But more importantly we are still the most extensive and most rooted Association of civil rights leaders across the country.  YOU are now a part of that,.  We are prepared to show the power we have in our commitment to social issues in the community.  We believe in people power, and that we will always be a  superpower in the fight for social, economic  and racial justice.

The NAACP is laser focused on youth council members becoming good citizens of the community, therefore you  should become aware of issues involving the community and the best way to do that is to read your local newspaper and listen to television and radio news broadcasts/podcasts that provide information  on issues of vital interest to you as a person and citizen.
