UTICA, N.Y. A little community generosity can go a long way, especially when the goal is to keep useful materials out of the trash and put them into creative hands. Utica Creative Reuse says 67 individual donors contributed a total of $7,475 during this year’s Mohawk Valley Gives campaign. The organization shared the result in its September 30 update, thanking supporters for helping it keep art materials out of landfills.
For an organization built on the idea that discarded supplies can find a second life, the fundraising result is an encouraging reminder that donations do not have to be enormous to add up to something meaningful.
What is creative reuse?
Utica Creative Reuse collects and redistributes materials that might otherwise be thrown away. A leftover craft supply, unused paper or other usable item can become a resource for an artist, teacher, family or curious beginner. The nonprofit says financial gifts, donated materials and thrift-store purchases all support its mission.
Reuse offers people another option between buying everything new and throwing everything out. It makes room for experimentation while encouraging the community to think differently about waste. The $7,475 figure is the organization’s reported fundraising total, not a claim that a specific number of pounds of material has been diverted by those gifts.
The community can keep participating
The nonprofit’s October calendar gives neighbors several ways to get involved beyond donating money. A Learn to Use Your Sewing Machine session is listed for Thursday, October 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. Participants are invited to bring their machines and learn basic sewing skills. An Art Club pumpkin-painting session is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, from 1 to 3 p.m., with limited supplies and an RSVP requested.
On Thursday, October 29, the organization lists a Repair Café from 6 to 8 p.m., where residents may register to volunteer or request help fixing something broken. A sensory play group for children ages 2 to 5 is scheduled for Saturday, October 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., featuring stations made from upcycled materials. Check directly with the organizer for availability or schedule changes before attending.
Why it is good news for Utica
This is a practical kind of good news. Donors support a local organization; unwanted materials get another opportunity to be useful; and families gain a place to learn, make and share. The fundraising number is one measure of success, but participation is another. Utica Creative Reuse invites people to support it through financial donations, material donations and store purchases.
For anyone clearing out a craft closet or hoping to try a new skill, the next step is simple: check what the organization currently accepts, browse its upcoming events and see how you can take part. Small individual acts were enough for 67 donors to build a meaningful fundraising result together.
