Tompkins County records first fully vaccinated COVID death

The Tompkins County Health Department says a 93-year-old man died of COVID-19 despite being fully vaccinated.

Cayuga Medical Center told the health department the patient died on September 11. This is the first death of a fully vaccinated resident in the county. The county’s public health director did say in a statement that the man did have pre-existing health conditions.

In the meantime, hospitals in the North Country continue to experience staffing shortages and it’s causing one in particular to make some serious changes.

Lewis County Health System says it will have to end maternity ward services in Lowville. There aren’t enough people on staff currently to deliver babies there.

The system CEO says the new policy goes into effect September 24.
