Rome, NY – November 11, 2025 – The Humane Society of Rome has announced it will break ground on a new, state-of-the-art animal care facility on December 3, 2025, at 10:00 am. The groundbreaking ceremony will mark the official start of construction for the 20,000-square-foot building, located at 6247 Lamphear Road in Rome, directly behind the organization current shelter.
The new facility is the result of extensive planning and fundraising efforts. It is designed to provide an enhanced environment for the animals in their care and a more welcoming atmosphere for visitors and potential adopters. The project, estimated to cost $8 million, will adhere to all New York State regulations and is slated for completion in late 2026.
Funding for the new building has been significantly bolstered by community support and a state grant. “Thanks to the community's generous donations over the years, we have $4 million to start our project. We have also been awarded $500,000.00 in a state grant,” said Lynn Rosen, board president.
Rosen added that the organization will continue its fundraising efforts to secure the remaining funds.
The Humane Society of Rome has been a cornerstone of the community for years, committed to its mission of finding permanent, loving homes for stray, abandoned, neglected, abused, and owner- relinquished animals. The new facility will allow the organization to expand its capacity and improve the quality of care provided.
