Teal Ribbon Run returns to Minoa this weekend

This month is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. A popular event will return to Onondaga County on Saturday as a way to raise awareness and funds to fight the disease.

The 13th annual Teal Ribbon Run will take place in the Village of Minoa. Earlier this week, race officials joined local dignitaries and “Men of Teal” to paint a teal stripe down North Main Street.

The goal is to remind women to know the symptoms of ovarian cancer and talk to their doctor.

Meanwhile, runners and walkers can still sign up for the live events that will be held Saturday. You can register for an in-person 5K run or 3K walk, or do them virtually.

Organizers said it will be a great feeling to see Lewis Park filled with teal to promote a positive message.

“We were virtual last year, so we’re happy to be back this year,” said Hope for Heather Founder Frieda Weeks. “We’re not sure what size crowd we’ll have, but whatever size crowd we’ll have, we’re just going to be happy to see everyone.  We’re so excited to be back and to be live.”

The event was started in memory of Heather Weeks, who died of cancer at the age of 24 in 2008.

Registration this year is taking place online. Visit HopeforHeather.org to register and learn more about ovarian cancer and its symptoms.
