Trump Rule of Law: The Alarming Cost to American Democracy Sub Title: A veteran’s view of an administration that too often appears to put power, wealth, and political loyalty ahead of the Constitution and the people who serve. Trump Rule of Law should mean one simple thing: no president, Cabinet official, corporation, or wealthy donor is above the Constitution. Yet the current administration has too often acted as if constitutional limits, court oversight, trade commitments, and public accountability are obstacles rather than duties. The U.S. Constitution begins with the words, “We the People.” It does not say “we the wealthy.” It does not say “we the well-connected.” It does not say “we the political loyalists who can excuse every mistake.” The Constitution is a promise that government will serve the public, follow the law, and protect the rights and dignity of every American. That promise is being tested. I joined the military 47 years ago and served my country under four presidents. I understand that public service requires sacrifice, discipline, and loyalty to something greater than any one person. I have watched presidents of both parties make mistakes. But I have not seen such open disregard for constitutional restraint, ethical responsibility, and the well-being of military personnel as I see from this administration. This is not about hating a president. It is not about hating the military. It is about loving the country enough to say when its leaders are failing it. Trump Rule of Law Is About More Than Politics The rule of law means that government leaders follow the Constitution and the laws of the United States. It means Congress has a duty to oversee the executive branch. It means courts must remain independent. It means public officials cannot use their power to reward friends, punish critics, or protect the wealthy at the expense of working people. It also means a president cannot demand personal loyalty that rises above loyalty to the Constitution. The current administration often presents aggressive executive action as strength. But strength without accountability is not leadership. It is power without restraint. This administration also stands out because of the extraordinary personal wealth represented in its leadership circle. Wealth alone does not disqualify a person from public service. A successful businessperson can serve honorably. But when an administration is filled with wealthy executives, investors, and people with deep corporate connections, Americans have a right to ask who benefits from its decisions. Are policies designed for families trying to buy groceries? For small businesses trying to stay open? For farmers trying to survive? For workers trying to afford housing and health care? Or are they designed to enrich people who already have more than enough? Beef Prices Show a Backward Approach The administration’s response to high beef prices is a clear example of the problem. American families are paying more at the grocery store. Ground beef prices have risen as the nation’s cattle herd has fallen to historically low levels after years of drought, rising costs, and herd reductions. Ranchers have faced difficult choices, and rebuilding a herd takes time. The administration has pointed to the need for lower prices. That concern is valid. Families need relief. But its proposed response, temporarily allowing more lower-cost imported ground beef into the United States, raises serious questions. According to reporting by Axios, the administration’s recent policy included an effort to bring in imported ground beef at prices below the current market rate. The goal was to provide short-term relief for consumers. But what happens to American cattle producers when the government’s answer to high prices is to expand lower-cost imports? The contradiction is hard to ignore. The administration says it wants to support American producers, but then pursues a policy that could weaken the market position of the very ranchers needed to rebuild the domestic cattle herd. You cannot say you are protecting American agriculture while creating conditions that may make it harder for American producers to compete. The American Farm Bureau Federation has documented the pressure created by the nation’s historically low cattle inventory. That problem will not be fixed with a short-term political headline. A serious plan would support consumers and producers. It would address the reasons cattle numbers fell. It would examine corporate concentration in meatpacking. It would help family ranchers access credit, rebuild herds, and receive a fair price for their work. Instead, the administration appears willing to use imports as a quick fix, while American farmers and ranchers are left wondering whether Washington will stand behind them when it matters. A Better Way to Protect Families and Farmers Lower grocery prices should not come at the expense of American producers. A responsible policy should include: Support for family ranchers rebuilding cattle herds. Stronger enforcement against unfair market practices. Greater transparency in meatpacking and food pricing. Practical consumer relief that does not undermine domestic agriculture. Long-term planning instead of short-term political gestures. The question is not whether families deserve affordable food. They do. The question is whether the administration is solving the real problem or simply shifting its cost onto someone else. Canada Trade Policy Breaks Faith With America’s Own Deal The administration’s approach to Canada presents another troubling contradiction. During his first term, President Trump championed the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, known as the USMCA. He promoted it as an improved replacement for NAFTA and a historic achievement for American workers, manufacturers, and farmers. But now the administration’s trade actions and threats toward Canada risk undermining the stability that agreement was supposed to create. Trade agreements are not campaign props. They are commitments. Farmers make planting decisions based on them. Manufacturers make investments based on them. Workers depend on the jobs tied to them. Small businesses rely on predictable supply chains. When Washington changes the rules through sudden tariff threats or trade pressure, the damage often falls first on those least able to absorb it. Large corporations may have lawyers, cash reserves, and overseas operations. A family farm in upstate New York does not. A small manufacturer does not. A worker whose job depends on cross-border trade does not. Trump Rule of Law also means respecting the agreements the United States has made. A president cannot call a deal historic one day and treat its commitments as optional the next. That is not strength. It is instability. The Military Deserves More Than Slogans The most painful example of this administration’s misplaced priorities may be the treatment of military personnel. I served under four presidents. I know that deployments are hard. I know sailors, soldiers, airmen, Marines, Guardians, and Coast Guard personnel are trained to endure conditions most Americans will never face. They accept hardship because they serve the nation. But accepting hardship does not mean accepting neglect. When I first heard reports months ago about food portions and ration concerns aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln, I was upset. Since then, newer reports about alleged living conditions and unsanitary conditions aboard the carrier have been sickening. NPR reported that family members and lawmakers raised concerns involving food supplies, sanitation, mental health, and the long operational strain on the USS Abraham Lincoln. Task & Purpose reported on accounts involving bathroom, laundry, and hygiene problems. Reports have described limited fresh food, long lines for meals, broken toilets, moldy showers, laundry issues, periods without hot water, and shortages of basic hygiene supplies. These allegations deserve serious independent review. The Navy has pushed back on parts of the public criticism and said the ship maintained adequate supplies despite difficult conditions during an extended deployment. Those statements should be considered. Long deployments in challenging regions create real logistical problems. Still, difficult conditions do not excuse conditions that endanger the health, morale, and dignity of the people serving aboard a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. A sailor should not have to question whether there will be a clean shower, working toilet, clean uniform, adequate meal, or basic toiletries. America spends enormous sums on defense. There is no good excuse for failing to meet basic standards for the people sent into harm’s way. Supporting Troops Means Holding Leaders Accountable When veterans and military families criticize these policies, they are sometimes treated as though they are unpatriotic or hostile to the military. That is false. We do not hate the military. We do not hate veterans. We hate policies that fail our personnel while politicians demand applause and loyalty. Real support for the military is not a speech. It is not a parade. It is not a campaign slogan or a photo opportunity. Real support means ensuring that service members have safe living conditions, reliable food, proper medical care, adequate equipment, and leaders willing to listen when something goes wrong. Any politician who tells the public that the president loves the military and takes care of them while dismissing these reports is not serving the people. That is bootlicking, not leadership. Patriotism is not blind obedience. Patriotism means holding government accountable, especially when it fails people who volunteered to serve. Americans Must Demand Accountability The United States is strongest when its leaders follow the Constitution, respect the rule of law, protect public institutions, and put people ahead of personal power. This is not a left-versus-right issue. It should not be. Americans of every political viewpoint should oppose government policies that enrich the already wealthy while families struggle with rising costs. Americans should oppose leaders who treat trade agreements as disposable. Americans should demand answers when military personnel report unacceptable conditions. Trump Rule of Law is not about loyalty to any one man. It is about loyalty to the Constitution and the American people. The country needs leaders who understand that public office is a responsibility, not a reward. We need lawmakers who will conduct oversight. We need journalists who will keep asking questions. And we need citizens who refuse to stay silent. What do you think about what is happening in the United States? We want to hear from readers on the right, left, and center.
