Syracuse police to receive increased training

Additional training is coming to the Syracuse Police Department, thanks to $90,000 in funding.

Mayor Ben Walsh says the Syracuse Common Council approved the money to help with community engagement training, as well as training on cultural differences and diversity.

Sworn-in officers, new recruits and members of the civilian staff are all eligible for the training.

Walsh says the goal of the training is to create a better understanding of different cultures and improve conflict management. He also says it will help the department on how it handles investigations, stops and its use of force.

The program is being funded through the federal American Rescue Plan.
