SUNY Poly to Host International Mother Language Day Event on February 21

Utica, NY – In celebration of International Mother Language Day, SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY  Poly) will host a dynamic panel discussion, “The Power of Mother Languages in Shaping Identity and  Culture,” featuring prominent local leaders and language advocates. 

The event will take place on Friday, February 21, at 6 p.m. in the Student Center’s Multi-Purpose  Room. Attendance is free, but space is limited to 40 participants, and the RSVP deadline is Thursday, February 20, at noon. 

Panelists Include: 

  • Hawa Peters – Founder and President, Utica Royalties 
  • Sonia Martinez – Co-Founder and CEO, Mohawk Valley Latino Association 
  • Kyi Kyi Min – Translation Coordinator for tone 
  • Kay Klo – Executive Director, Midtown Utica Community Center 
  • Jermiko Thomas – Founder, Cornhill Publishing 

Event Highlights: 

This insightful discussion will explore the importance of preserving mother languages and their role  in shaping cultural identity, social cohesion, and personal empowerment in a globalized world.  Panelists will share their experiences and perspectives on how language connects individuals to  their heritage while fostering inclusivity and community strength.
