UTICA, NY – SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) celebrated the $40 million renovation of its
Campus Center with a ribbon-cutting ceremony today, marking the completion of a major
investment in the university’s campus infrastructure and student experience.
The project, which began in February 2024, transformed the Campus Center into a more
modern, accessible and welcoming destination for students and the broader university
community. The renovation included the conversion of the building’s former pool area into new
classroom space, a centrally located Residential Life suite, renovated athletic locker rooms, and
improved offices and meeting spaces for coaches and student-athletes. Kevin Grimmer Court
also received significant upgrades, including a new playing surface, bleachers and scoreboard.
The project also included significant improvements to the building’s lobby, circulation, and ADA
accessibility. In addition, existing natural gas boilers were replaced with geothermal systems
that will provide heating and cooling while reducing the building’s carbon emissions.

in the future of SUNY Poly,” said SUNY Poly President Wole Soboyejo. “This project brings
together two important pillars of our strategic plan, Campus Infrastructure and Student
Success, by creating spaces where our students can learn, connect, compete and build a
stronger sense of community. We are grateful to New York State, SUNY, Chancellor John King,
the SUNY Construction Fund, and everyone who helped make this transformation possible.”
The Campus Center renovation is the centerpiece of a broader series of investments
transforming SUNY Poly’s campus. During the 2024-25 fiscal year alone, more than $61 million
in investments through New York State and the SUNY Construction Fund supported projects
across the university, highlighted by the $40 million Campus Center renovation.
These investments are helping SUNY Poly modernize its facilities, strengthen academic and
student spaces, and provide the infrastructure necessary to support the university’s continued
growth. They also contribute to the Mohawk Valley economy by supporting local businesses
and workers, while strengthening SUNY Poly’s ability to attract students, faculty, researchers,
partners and future investment to the region.
The renovation was completed in partnership with the SUNY Construction Fund, which worked
closely with SUNY Poly throughout the planning and construction process.
The renovated Campus Center will continue to serve as one of SUNY Poly’s primary gathering
places, bringing together academic, residential, athletic and student-life functions within one
facility. Students will use the building for classes, events, activities, some athletic programs, and
opportunities to connect with one another and the broader campus community.
