STATEMENT FROM REPRESENTATIVE JOHN W. MANNION

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) today released the following statement on the Senate proposal to fund all of DHS except Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
“There have been many reasonable proposals to reopen the government, and the Senate compromise is exactly the approach I’ve been pursuing for weeks: pay TSA and other workers while we negotiate reforms to ICE and CBP.
Now, even with a path forward in front of them, extreme voices in the House are reportedly refusing to bring it to a vote, blocking a solution that would likely pass and end this immediately.
This offer has been on the table since day one, these workers should never have gone this long without pay, and Americans should never have faced miserable delays at our airports. Instead, the President is unnecessarily continuing to force federal workers to go without pay as leverage, with his enablers in the House following his lead.
New Yorkers want commonsense guardrails for ICE – standards that every other law enforcement agency follows. No masks, clear identification, body-worn cameras, use-of-force standards, judicial warrants, transparency and accountability, and no operations in schools or houses of worship.
I won’t rubberstamp billions of additional taxpayers’ dollars to reinforce ICE without these basic reforms.
I’m ready to work with anyone, in either party, to restore public trust and move forward.”
