State Police arrest Bronx man following Halfmoon dispute

On January 6, 2025, State Police of Clifton Park arrested Shaheem L. Morris, 35, of Bronx, NY, for Aggravated Family Offense, Menacing in the second degree, Criminal Mischief in the fourth degree, two counts of Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Obstructing Governmental Administration in the second degree, resisting arrest and Harassment in the second degree.

On January 5, 2025, at about 11:51 p.m., Troopers responded to a residence in Halfmoon, NY, following a 911 call in which a man could be heard threatening to physically harm another person.  The investigation revealed that Morris and an adult victim were engaged in a verbal argument with two children present. During the altercation, Morris pushed the victim. When the victim attempted to call 911, Morris allegedly threatened to kill the victim if the call was made, leading the victim to hang up. Upon arrival, Troopers found Morris holding the infant and refusing to put the child down, hand the child over to a family member, or cooperate with the investigation. Concerned for the infant’s safety, Troopers took Morris into custody despite his continued resistance. The infant was safely turned over to a family member and was unharmed. Further investigation revealed that Morris had been previously convicted of a Family Offense within the last five years.

Morris was transported to Albany Medical Center for treatment of injuries sustained while resisting arrest.  Upon discharge, he was transported to SP Clifton Park for processing.  Morris was arraigned at the Halfmoon Town Court, where he was remanded to the Saratoga County Correctional Facility without bail.


Physical Domestic leads to arrest in the town of Colton

On October 22, 2024, at approximately 6:05 p.m., Troopers responded to Church Street in the village of Tupper Lake for a report of physical domestic that occurred at a residence on State Highway 56 in the town of Colton.  An investigation determined Jose A. Melendez and the victim were involved in a verbal argument which led to Melendez wrapping a lanyard around the victim’s neck causing the victim to physical injury.  The victim was later able to get away from Melendez, leave the residence and traveling to Tupper Lake where the victim was interviewed by the State Police.  Melendez fled the area.  Further investigation led the State Police to Melendez was known to be in Ohio.  Melendez was located, arrested, and transported back to New York.

On January 7, 2025, New York State Police arrested Jose A Melendez, age 36, of South Colton, NY, for assault 2nd, and strangulation 2nd.  He was arraigned in the Town of Canton Court and remanded to St. Lawrence County jail in lieu of $25,000.


NYSP asking public to help locate man missing from Windsor area

New York State Police at Binghamton is asking for the public’s assistance in locating a man who was reported missing on January 3, 2025.  

Edward L. Crampton, age 68 has not been seen by his family since around Thanksgiving. Crampton is known to stay in his vehicle on Old Route 17 near ARS Auto in Windsor and known to walk to Mirabito or the Big M but has not been seen at any of those locations in several weeks.  Crampton does not drive the vehicle and it is still parked on Old Route 17.  It’s believed that Crampton does not currently have a working cellphone. 

Troopers have checked the area,  with local shelters and local hospitals but have not been able to locate Crampton.

State Police are Investigating a Tractor Trailer Fatal Collision on Interstate 87 in the Town of Athens

On January 8, 2025, at approximately 3:49 p.m., New York State Police responded to a one car motor vehicle collision on Interstate 87 north, New York State Thruway, by exit 21 in the town of Athens.
 
The preliminary investigation indicated that a 2005 International Harvester tractor trailer was traveling northbound on Interstate 87 when it exited the roadway to the right shoulder for unknown reasons. The tractor trailer then traveled down an embankment and became fully engulfed in flames. The operator and sole occupant of the tractor trailer identified as Sean Horsford, age 54, of Far Rockaway, NY, was ejected from the vehicle and was pronounced deceased at the scene.

State Police conduct an Underage Drinking Enforcement Detail in Clinton County

On January 8, 2025, The New York State Police in conjunction with Clinton County, Stop DWI conducted an Underage Drinking Initiative in Clinton County, NY.

During the initiative, thirty-three businesses were checked for compliance. One person was charged with Unlawfully Dealing with a Child in the First degree, a class “A” misdemeanor, after selling alcohol to persons under the age of 21.

The following business was NOT in compliance with the New York Beverage Control Law Section 65, Prohibited Sale to Person Under the Age of 21

State Police Investigate Fatal in Lafayette

On January 8, 2025, at about 4:17 p.m., State Police from Lafayette responded to Ortloff Road in Lafayette for a personal injury accident.

A preliminary investigation revealed that Martin C. Givens, 73, from Lafayette, NY, was operating a 2010 red Impala south on Ortloff Road when he exited the shoulder, struck a ditch, and overturned.

The passenger of the vehicle, Peter C. Sweeting, age 48, from Tully, NY, was pronounced deceased on the scene.  

A second passenger, William P. Aungier, age 67, from Lafayette, NY, was transported to Upstate Hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Givens was transported to Upstate Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.  

The investigation into the cause of the crash is continuing; updates to follow.
