State Police arrest Valley Falls man for allegedly stealing money from a charitable organization
On January 9, 2025, State Police of Brunswick arrested George W. Gorman, 55, of Valley Falls, NY, for Grand Larceny in the fourth degree and Scheme to Defraud in the first degree.
On August 20, 2024, at about 9:47 a.m. State Police received information about a possible theft of donations meant for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society which is a non-profit organization. The investigation determined Gorman had allegedly collected numerous cash and check donations on behalf of the organization throughout 2024 and reportedly deposited those donations into multiple personal bank accounts belonging to himself. Gorman failed to forward all of those funds to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, resulting in the theft of more than $1,000 from the organization. Gorman has reportedly been a fundraising participant for approximately 20 years. The National Multiple Sclerosis Society has been cooperative with the investigation
Gorman was arrested and processed at SP Brunswick. He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to the Schaghticoke Town Court on January 20, 2024, and released.
The State Police urge community members who wish to donate to charitable organizations to send their contributions directly to the organization to avoid the risk of misdirected funds
Double Fatal on Southern State Parkway
On January 12th,2025 at approximately 11:09 pm, the State Police responded to a one car motor vehicle crash on the Southern State Parkway eastbound in the area of Exit 30, town of Oyster Bay, Nassau County. Investigation revealed a black 2016 Dodge Dart was traveling in and out of lanes at a high rate of speed before losing control and crashing into a tree on the shoulder. The vehicle had four occupants inside and two were deceased upon Troopers arrival. The operator of the vehicle Jaden Dsouza, age 19 of College Point and front passenger Anthonie Marte, age 23 of East Elmhurst were extracted from the vehicle and taken to a local hospital in serious condition. Rear passengers, Haily Dsouza, age 21, and Crystal Alba-Figueroa, age 23 were pronounced dead at the scene. Haily Dsouza was entrapped inside the vehicle and Crystal Alba-Figueroa was ejected from the vehicle.
Jaden Dsouza was charged with one count of Driving While Ability Impaired by drugs, Manslaughter 2nd, Vehicular Manslaughter 1st, Assault 2nd, Aggravated Vehicular Homicide.
The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI) and Collision Reconstruction Unit (CRU) responded to the scene to investigate. Fatal Snowmobile Crash in Jefferson County
On January 11, 2025, at about 9:51 p.m., State Police responded to Horace Forward Truck Trail in the town of Worth for a reported snowmobile accident.
A preliminary investigation revealed a 2021 Polaris snowmobile operated by Robert M. Barnett, age 51, from Watertown, NY, was traveling East on Horace Forward Truck Trail when he exited the north shoulder of the trail and struck a tree. Barnett was pronounced deceased at the scene.
State Police were assisted at the scene by Lewis County Search and Rescue.
State Police Investigates a One Car Motor Vehicle Collision in the Town of Clarkstown
On January 13, 2025, at approximately 1:22 a.m., New York State Police responded to a one car motor vehicle collision on Interstate 87 south bound, New York State Thruway, in the town of Clarkstown, NY.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2022 Tesla was traveling south bound on Interstate 87 by exit 12 at a high rate of speed, when the operator attempted to change lanes to exit off the thruway at exit 12 and subsequently struck the end of the guide rail. The 2022 Tesla overturns multiple times ultimately striking a utility pole. The operator and sole occupant of the vehicle identified as Justin Drinks, age 28, of New City, NY, was extricated from the vehicle and pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is still ongoing.
State Police Investigate a One Car Fatal in the Town of Montgomery
On January 11, 2025, at approximately 2:57 a.m., Troopers from the Montgomery barracks responded to a one car motor vehicle collision on interstate 84 west by exit 28 in the town of Montgomery.
The preliminary investigation revealed that a 2017 Nissan Sentra was traveling on interstate 84 west bound at a high rate of speed when it left the roadway for unknown reasons, struck a tree, and became engulfed in flames. The Maybrook Fire Department and the Mechanicstown Fire Department extinguished the vehicle fire. The victim and sole occupant of the vehicle was extricated from the vehicle and was later identified as Melvin Moultrie, age 21, of Middletown, NY. Moultrie was pronounced deceased at the scene. The investigation is still ongoing.
New York State Police Arrest Prattsburgh Man for Animal Cruelty Following Abandoned Dog Investigation
On December 28, 2024, troopers from SP Bath responded to a complaint of an abandoned dog at a residence on Thornapple Hill Road in the town of Prattsburgh.
An investigation revealed that a dog had been abandoned inside the residence. The dog appeared to be emaciated and was not being cared for. The Steuben County Dog Control Officer responded and removed the dog. Information was developed as to who owned the dog.
On January 13, 2025, Chad C. Alfano, age 35, of Prattsburgh, NY, was processed at SP Bath. He was charged with Torturing Or Injuring Animals/Failure To Provide Sustenance (A Misdemeanor). He was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Prattsburgh Town Court on February 12, 2025.
