Schoharie Man Faces Felony Charges After Violent Robbery
State Police say an elderly victim was repeatedly struck before a wallet and money were forcibly taken from a Schoharie home.
A Schoharie robbery investigation has led to multiple felony charges against a 51-year-old man after New York State Police said an elderly person was violently attacked inside a Church Street residence.
State Police announced Tuesday, Aug. 11, that Massimo Palleschi, 51, of Schoharie, was arrested Aug. 7 and charged with robbery, assault, possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen property.
The allegations remain accusations, and Palleschi is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
Police Say Elderly Victim Was Repeatedly Struck
Troopers responded to a residence on Church Street in Schoharie at about 2:04 a.m. Aug. 7 after receiving a report of a robbery.
According to State Police, investigators determined that Palleschi allegedly attacked an elderly person at the home during the previous evening.
Police said the victim was struck multiple times before the assailant allegedly took the person’s wallet and money by force.
State Police described the incident as a violent robbery but did not release the victim’s name, age or information about the extent of the person’s injuries.
The agency also did not publicly disclose whether the victim and Palleschi knew one another or what allegedly led to the confrontation.
Four Charges Filed
State Police said Palleschi faces four charges:
- Second-degree robbery, a Class C felony
- Second-degree assault, a Class D felony
- Fifth-degree criminal possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony
- Fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property, a Class E felony
The most serious charge listed by police is second-degree robbery.
The charges reflect allegations made by investigators. A criminal charge is not proof of guilt, and prosecutors would ultimately have to establish the case in court.
Police Report Finding Victim’s Wallet
State Police said investigators continued their work after the reported attack and searched Palleschi’s residence.
Authorities reported finding the victim’s wallet as well as what police described as a controlled substance inside the residence.
Police did not identify the substance in their public announcement or state how much was allegedly recovered.
Those details could become important as the criminal case proceeds, particularly in connection with the controlled-substance charge.
Palleschi Held in Schoharie County Jail
Following his arrest, Palleschi was processed at the State Police barracks in Cobleskill.
He was later arraigned in Schoharie County Centralized Part Court.
According to State Police, the court ordered him held at the Schoharie County Correctional Facility under the following bail conditions:
- $5,000 cash bail
- $10,000 bond
- $20,000 partially secured bond
A publicly indexed court-record search also shows a New York criminal proceeding involving Palleschi filed Aug. 7, consistent with the timing of the State Police announcement.
What Has Not Been Released
Several questions surrounding the Schoharie robbery remain unanswered.
State Police had not disclosed:
- The victim’s identity or specific age
- The victim’s medical condition
- A possible motive
- The amount of money allegedly taken
- The type or quantity of the alleged controlled substance
- Whether Palleschi and the victim had a prior relationship
- Palleschi’s next scheduled court appearance
