
On April 20, 2025, at around 2:00 AM, Rome Police officers conducted a citizen stop on Richard Cayton for operating a bike with no rear light on Black River Blvd. at Ace Place. Officers attempted to stop Cayton but he fled. While fleeing Cayton made several statements that he had a gun on him resulting in officers deploying a taser on Cayton.

After Cayton was taken into custody, Cayton was found in possession of metal knuckles, a switchblade, and a quantity of cocaine and methamphetamine, as well as, other drug paraphernalia. No gun was located. Cayton was arrested and charged with two counts of criminal possession of a weapon in the 3rd degree, two counts of criminal possession of a controlled substance in the 7th degree, and obstructing governmental administration in the 2nd degree. Cayton was transported to Oneida County Jail where he is being held for arraignment.
