Rome, NY – At a solemn ceremony on Tuesday, September 30th, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon (D-119) and Senator Joseph Griffo (R-53) stood with the family of Officer Michael E. Jensen to unveil new signage dedicating a portion of State Route 46 to honor the fallen Syracuse Police Officer and Rome native.
Joining Senator Griffo, Assemblywoman Buttenschon, Michelle, Paul, and the rest of Jensen
family were Oneida County Executive Anthony J. Picente Jr., Rome Mayor Jeffrey Lanigan,
Assemblymembers who co-sponsored the legislation to make this dedication possible, as well as state and local dignitaries, law enforcement representatives from across the region, and community members.
The designated stretch of Route 46 was chosen with deep meaning. It begins at Prospect Street along State Route 46 (Black River Boulevard) in the City of Rome, close to where Officer Jensen’s family lived when he was born. From there, the road continues north, passing the street where his family resides today, and extends all the way to Dixon Drive in the Town of Western. Along this path, the route also travels past Delta Lake, a place where Officer Jensen spent countless hours fishing, relaxing, and making memories.
This highway now stands as a living symbol of his journey, from his earliest roots in Rome to the places he cherished most. Officer Jensen, just 29 years old, was killed in the line of duty on April 14, 2024, along with Lieutenant Michael Hoosock of the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office while responding to a standoff in Salina, NY. He was more than a police officer; he was a mentor, a teammate, a role model, and a symbol of hope for an entire community.
He graduated from Rome Free Academy where he was a standout student and athlete, admired for his leadership, discipline, and humility. He went on to attend Le Moyne College, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Business, a Master’s degree in Business Administration and a place in the hearts of professors, classmates, and friends.
Officer Michael Jensen served with deep conviction and unwavering honor. His life was rooted in compassion, courage, and a desire to protect those around him. His legacy now lives on, not just in the memories of those who knew and loved him, but in the highway that will forever bear his name.
The significance of the dedication was captured by the words of the Jensen family: “We are
very honored and thankful for this tribute to Michael’s life. We would like to thank Senator
Griffo and Assemblywoman Buttenschon for their hard work and dedication to ensure that
Michael’s legacy is not forgotten. This road will not only bear Michael’s name, but will also bea lasting tribute to him. Every person that travels this road will be reminded of the hero that Michael was and his courage, kindness and unwavering commitment to serving and protecting others.”
