Rome Go Red for Women Luncheon

The Mohawk Valley celebrated National Wear Red Day to help raise awareness and funds to fight the number one killer of women – cardiovascular disease. The American Heart Association (AHA), the leading voluntary health organization devoted to a world of longer, healthier lives, together with its Go Red for Women movement, are thanking the hundreds of Mohawk Valley businesses, organizations, schools and people “going red” to support National Wear Red Day.

For the fifth year in a row, the American Heart Association hosted the Rome Go Red for Women Luncheon, sponsored by Rome Memorial Hospital. The event, held at Teugega Country Club, featured Passion Speaker Kelley Uvanni. Kelley shared the impact of losing her grandmother to heart disease and how it shaped her healthy lifestyle. Keynote speaker Jaclyn Davidson, owner of SWEAT CNY, shared some of the simple changes you can make to live a healthier life.

The Rome Go Red for Women Luncheon was led by Go Red for Women Chairwoman Jennifer Keida, President and CEO of Standing Insulating Co.  The event is sponsored national by CVS Health and locally by First Source Federal Credit Union, Rome Memorial Hospital, Northwestern Mutual DBJ Wealth Management, Uvanni Motors, Excellus BluCross BlueShield, Gates Cole Insurance, Hazen B. Hinman Sr. Foundation, Professional Media Services, and Lite98.7/Townsquare Media.

“Our goal today is that you help us break the silence and change the tide about the devastating impact heart disease is having on our families, our communities and on women in particular,” said Keida. “One in three. That’s the price women pay for cardiovascular disease. One in three women will die of cardiovascular disease. That’s a third of our mothers, sisters and friends. It’s time to change this fact.”

Heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, taking more lives than all forms of cancer combined. Someone you know and love may be affected – at any age.

That’s why the American Heart Association’s Go Red for Women movement, nationally sponsored by CVS Health, encourages you to show your support by wearing red and giving on Friday, February 7 to help raise awareness and save lives from heart disease.

While nearly 80 percent of cardiac events can be prevented through education and lifestyle changes, cardiovascular diseases continue to be a woman’s greatest health threat.

To treat, beat and prevent heart disease and stroke, women should understand family health history, know their five key personal health numbers to help determine risk and make healthy behavior changes like moving more, eating smart and managing blood pressure.

Additionally, several landmarks and buildings will illuminate in red to help raise awareness to women’s heart health. More than fifty locations around the Utica area will be “going red” Friday night to help raise awareness.
