SYRACUSE, NY – Representative John W. Mannion (NY-22) today released the following statement on the Trump Administration’s firing of thousands of federal workers, including at the Department of Veterans Affairs:
“Firing dedicated public servants doesn’t make government more efficient – it decimates services that Central New Yorkers and residents of the Mohawk Valley depend on. President Trump’s decision to take orders from Elon Musk and fire employees across the federal government will mean longer wait times for veterans who need health care, fewer workers to process your tax refund, less law enforcement to address national security and criminal threats, and fewer supports for students with disabilities and their families.
I support eliminating waste and fraud in government spending but firing employees that the VA and other agencies have hired to serve our veterans and taxpayers won’t make the government more cost effective or put money back in people’s pockets. Instead, it makes the government less responsive to the people and erodes more than a century of progress for collective bargaining and workers’ rights.
I oppose these destructive policies and will continue to stand up and speak out because these workers and the public deserve better than what Musk, Trump, and their cronies are doing to our country.”
