Remembering Steve DiMeo: A Legacy of Vision, Passion, and Impact

By David LaGuerre

The Mohawk Valley community is mourning the loss of a true visionary and tireless champion, Steve DiMeo, who passed away on March 6, 2024, at the age of 69. As the longtime president of Mohawk Valley Edge (MVEDGE), DiMeo dedicated over three decades of his life to driving urban and economic development in the region.

A Brilliant Mind Dedicated to Public Service

Born in 1955, Steve DiMeo’s journey began with a degree in political science from the University at Albany, followed by a master’s in public administration from Georgia State University. His academic pursuits laid the foundation for a remarkable career in public service that spanned nearly 40 years.

DiMeo’s impact on the Mohawk Valley was evident from the very beginning. In 1984, he assumed the role of commissioner for the city of Utica, setting the stage for his transformative work. However, his vision extended far beyond city limits, and in the early 1990s, he became the first president of MVEDGE, a position he would hold for over 30 years.

Transforming the Mohawk Valley

Throughout his tenure at MVEDGE, DiMeo spearheaded numerous initiatives that reshaped the region’s economic landscape. His leadership was instrumental in the revitalization of the Griffiss Business and Technology Park, transforming it into a hub of innovation and job creation.

Moreover, DiMeo played a pivotal role in establishing operations at the Marcy Nanocenter, a critical development that positioned the Mohawk Valley as a contender in the high-tech industry.

A Legacy of Courage and Resilience

Even in the face of adversity, DiMeo exemplified courage and resilience. After receiving a diagnosis, he refused to let his circumstances define him, continuing to champion the causes he believed in with unwavering determination.

Oneida County Executive Anthony Picente Jr. expressed deep sadness at DiMeo’s passing, emphasizing his brilliance and passion for improving the region. “I relied on him as much as the rest of our county did. He worked tirelessly to improve this region, up until the moment he passed away,” Picente said.

A Well-Respected Man, Valued Across the State and Nation

DiMeo’s impact extended far beyond the Mohawk Valley, earning him respect and admiration from leaders across New York State and the nation. Senator Joseph Griffo, who met DiMeo during the Griffiss Air Force Base BRAC in 1993, described him as a “well-respected man valued across the State and Nation.”

In November 2023, DiMeo’s lifelong dedication was honored with the prestigious New York State Commendation Award, recognizing his efforts to enrich the social, religious, and educational well-being of his community.

A Lasting Legacy

Steve DiMeo’s legacy is etched into the fabric of the Mohawk Valley community he loved and served. His commitment to community welfare, his unwavering passion for change, and his infectious optimism will continue to inspire generations to come.

As we bid farewell to this remarkable individual, we are reminded of the profound impact one person can have when driven by a vision and a relentless pursuit of bettering the lives of others.

Business Person of the Year

Rest in peace, Steve DiMeo. Your memory will forever be a guiding light for those who seek to make a lasting difference in their communities, and your impact will echo through the Mohawk Valley for years to come.
