by Richelle CareyI’m reaching out to offer Dr. Seanelle Hawkins, Chair of the New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies, for an interview or feature.
For nearly a year, the Commission has traveled statewide, gathering testimony from Black New Yorkers impacted by slavery’s legacy, segregation, redlining, discriminatory policing, the War on Drugs, and long-term systemic harm. The Commission is now in the final stage of public testimony, and the drafting of the report will follow.
The next public hearing is in Utica:
Tuesday, December 9th:
Time: 5:30 PM – 9:00 PM
Location: The Carol L. Crooms BECA Center, 1105 Park Ave, Utica, NY
Dr. Hawkins can discuss:
-
What families and communities across NY have shared
-
Themes emerging across regions and generations
-
Why this truth-gathering phase is crucial
-
What comes next after public testimony concludes
If you’d like to speak with Dr. Hawkins, I’d be happy to arrange it. We believe this is a timely conversation worth having.
