Oneida County Health Department Will Replace Expired Narcan®

The Oneida County Health Department (OCHD) announced today that it will replace any expiring Narcan® it provided to local businesses and organizations.

In the summer of 2022, the Oneida County Opioid Task Force launched the “Save-a-Life” campaign which helped expand access to naloxone by distributing free overdose rescue kits to more public places including businesses and community organizations. The Narcan® in those kits may be expired or soon expiring and should be replaced.

“If you have expired Narcan®, we can replace it. If you need Narcan®, we can provide it,” said Daniel W. Gilmore, Ph.D., MPH, Director of Health. “Consider Narcan® to be another tool in your first aid kit.”

The “Save-a-Life” campaign greatly increased the number of public places that have naloxone, helped laypersons recognize signs of an overdose and understand how to administer naloxone nasal spray, which when administered on time, can stop an overdose death.

“Since the launch of this campaign, Oneida County and its community partners have mailed Narcan® to over 840 homes, provided Narcan® to 836 businesses and have stocked over 230 Narcan® cabinets,” said County Executive Anthony J. Picente, Jr. “Those efforts have saved lives.”
