UTICA, N.Y. A fall cleanup brought practical help to 100 seniors’ homes across Oneida County, with 546 young volunteers taking on outdoor chores as part of the Oneida County fall cleanup.
The county released those figures on October 23. The work took place October 17 and 18, during the program’s 16th annual fall cleanup.
Students lend a hand
Volunteers gathered leaves, swept outdoor areas and carried light refuse to the curb. The project joined the county’s Youth Bureau and Office for the Aging and Continuing Care with colleges, schools and youth groups.
Participants included groups from Utica University, Mohawk Valley Community College, T.R. Proctor High School and Utica Academy of Science Charter School, among many others listed by the county.
Why the work matters
For an older resident, help with a yard can be more than a seasonal convenience. It is a concrete way for neighbors to share work that might otherwise fall on one household.
The Office for the Aging and Continuing Care says its broader goal is to help older adults and people with disabilities maintain independence. It also connects families and caregivers with home and community services. Available help depends on a person’s needs and circumstances.
How to get involved
Colleges, schools and youth organizations interested in future cleanups can call the Youth Bureau at 315-798-5027. Seniors who want to ask about yard help can call the Office for the Aging and Continuing Care at 315-798-5456.
Call ahead to ask about the next opportunity, available space and any requirements. The completed October cleanup is not an open registration event.
