On-Point for College 25th Celebration Recognizes Community Leaders & Students
OnPoint for College recently held its annual celebration, highlighting the transformative impact of its mission to support first-generation and refugee students in achieving higher education. Ginny Donohue, the organization’s founder, and Sam Browser, the Executive Director, were present to honor the success of the program, which has enabled over 1,400 students to graduate from college. Many graduates have excelled in various fields, becoming doctors, physician assistants, accountants, and even SUNY Trustees.
The event featured a powerful keynote speech by Hilda Jordan, a Harvard graduate and CEO of her own company, who shared her inspiring journey. Her story underscored the vital role OnPoint for College plays in changing lives and creating opportunities for underserved communities.
Hilda Mabel Jordan, CEO and founder of HMJ Equity Consultant, discussed the essence of education in her keynote address titled “The Purpose of Education and On Point for College.” She emphasized that high-quality education provides students with options, choices, and the necessary tools to achieve their dreams. According to her, the best education empowers students to make their own choices, rather than simply pushing them down the easiest path.
The OnPoint for College 25th Anniversary Celebration honored exceptional individuals and organizations for their substantial impact on education and community development in the Mohawk Valley. Key recipients included community leaders, educational institutions, and local supporters recognized for their dedication and contributions:
- Dream Maker Award: Recognizing Utica City School District leaders, including Superintendent Dr. Christopher Spence, along with Joseph Hobika Jr. and James Paul, for their efforts to enhance student success.
- Foundation of Hope Award: Presented to the Mele Fund of the Community Foundation of Herkimer and Oneida Counties, with recognition to Ray Mele, Mike Valentine, and board president Reverend Joe Salerno for their philanthropic support.
- Community Leader Award: Given to Utica Mayor Michael Galime and Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon for their leadership and community impact.
- Make a Difference Award: Honoring Andrea Babenic (donor and consultant) and David Beck (an OnPoint alum and volunteer) for their significant contributions.
- Career Services Award: Awarded to Michael Brunne and Liz Pole of Bank of America for their career development initiatives.
- Campus Angel Award: Presented to Amy James of Hamilton College for her mentorship and advocacy for students
