New York City public bathrooms are set to expand under a pilot announced by Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s administration. The city selected Throne Labs to install and maintain 17 modular restroom units in neighborhoods across the five boroughs, according to city officials. This initiative aims to improve NYC public bathrooms for residents, workers, and visitors alike.
The project addresses a basic problem familiar to residents, workers and visitors: finding a clean, open restroom in a public place. The city says the units will be free to use, accessible and designed for locations where traditional restroom construction can be slow or difficult.

The New York City Economic Development Corporation said the contract is valued at $4 million. The agreement covers installation and maintenance of 17 units. The restrooms use a modular design, allowing them to be placed more quickly than permanent buildings.

Supporters argue that modular units can be deployed faster and moved if a location does not work. Critics of similar projects have questioned costs, durability and the ability of automated or high-tech facilities to handle heavy daily use. Those concerns can be tested with clear data.
