Don’t Get Scammed! MVILR Speaker to Expose Cyber Threats, AI Fraud Targeting Seniors

Free Oct. 27 presentation includes RFID card checks and information on recovering money lost to fraud

Join us for the MVILR cybersecurity talk, where we will delve into AI scams affecting seniors.

ROME, N.Y. — Could a phone call from a loved one actually be a scammer using artificial intelligence to copy their voice? Could a convincing text message from your bank be a trap?

As criminals develop increasingly sophisticated ways to steal money and personal information, the Mohawk Valley Institute for Learning in Retirement (MVILR) will host a free public presentation on cybersecurity, artificial intelligence and scams targeting older adults.

Tina McGowan, program coordinator with the Oneida County Office for the Aging and Continuing Care, will speak Tuesday, Oct. 27, from 10:45 to 11:45 a.m. in the Armond J. Festine Auditorium at Mohawk Valley Community College’s Rome Campus, 1101 Floyd Ave.

McGowan will discuss how scammers use artificial intelligence, fraudulent phone calls, deceptive emails and text messages to impersonate trusted individuals and organizations. She will also explain warning signs of identity theft, financial exploitation and common schemes targeting seniors.

As a special feature, McGowan will provide free RFID card checks to help participants determine whether their cards contain radio-frequency identification technology and discuss ways to protect their personal and financial information.

Attendees will also receive information on how to complete fraud victim forms, report financial scams and pursue available options for recovering money lost to fraud. Recovery is not guaranteed, but knowing where and how to report a crime can help victims take action.

The presentation is especially important for older adults, family members and caregivers seeking practical ways to recognize scams before becoming victims.

Admission is free and open to the public. No reservations are required. Ample free parking is available, and the campus is ADA accessible.

The MVILR Speakers Series connects Mohawk Valley residents with professionals and community leaders who address timely issues affecting everyday life.
