MVCC’s Airframe and Powerplant program accepting applications

Mohawk Valley Community College is accepting applications now for the Airframe and Powerplant certificate program’s cohort beginning May 1. This program is the only community college-based aviation maintenance program in New York State, and one of the only programs in the country that can be completed in one year. Three cohorts are offered, beginning in May, August, and January.

Located in Rome, N.Y., MVCC’s state-of-the-art Aviation Training Center is on the flight line of Griffiss International Airport and is about a half-mile from the newly renovated Rome branch campus, which offers advising, financial aid, and other student services.

Students follow a Federal Aviation Administration-authorized curriculum (Certificate #VXYT570K) that acts as a full-time, 40-hour-per-week training program that runs in three consecutive semesters. During this time, students earn 1,905 hours of training that prepares them to take the FAA exams required to earn the Airframe and Powerplant certificate.

Students spend 60 percent to 70 percent of this time getting hands-on experience on MVCC’s fleet of operational aircraft, which includes a Boeing 727-100, two Gulfstream GII business jets, a Bombardier Challenger 600, a twin-engine Cessna 310, Piper PA-28-140, and an OH-58 Helicopter. A variety of additional airframes are worked on, as well, such as General Electric, Pratt & Whitney, and Allison/Rolls Royce jet engines, Lycoming and Continental reciprocating engines, and other aircraft equipment and simulators.

“These high-paying aircraft maintenance technician jobs are in strong demand and the forecast for the next 10 years is over 134,000 openings across the U.S. with many local jobs, as well,” said Airframe & Powerplant Director Walter Constantini. “MVCC’s state-of-the-art program gives students approved credentials, hands-on skills, and applied knowledge that qualifies them for successful aircraft careers in every corner of the nation and right here in the Mohawk Valley.”
