MVCC alumna recipient of Phi Theta Kappa scholarship

Mohawk Valley Community College alumna Meghan Carpenter, now a student at Excelsior College, was awarded the Phi Theta Kappa scholarship, which is given to students who have achieved high academic success after transferring from a partner community college to obtain their bachelor’s degree.

Carpenter, a non-traditional student who graduated with her associate degree in Liberal Arts and General Studies in 2012, is pursuing her bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering technology. In 2011, she was inducted into MVCC’s five-star Lambda Beta Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, the international honor society for two-year colleges.

Phi Theta Kappa is the largest honor society in American higher education. The purpose of the organization is to recognize and encourage scholarship among two-year college students. MVCC’s chapter was formed in 1960 and welcomes new members each semester. Eligible students are sent an invitation to join the chapter. Membership is offered to enrolled students who have an overall GPA of 3.5 or higher with at least 12 credit hours toward a degree program. Chapter members are encouraged to get involved and take advantage of many opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service, and fellowship programming.
