Massena Crash Sends Driver to Hospital on Route 37

Massena Route 37 Crash Involving Tractor-Trailer Investigated

State Police say a Chevrolet crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming tractor-trailer Wednesday morning.

A Massena crash involving a passenger vehicle and a tractor-trailer sent one driver to the hospital Wednesday morning, according to the New York State Police.

Troopers said the two-vehicle collision happened at approximately 8:04 a.m. July 8 on State Highway 37 in the town of Massena. The crash remains a reminder of how quickly a routine morning drive can turn dangerous, particularly when a vehicle crosses into opposing traffic.

Chevrolet Crossed Into Oncoming Lane, Police Say

A preliminary State Police investigation found that a gray 2021 Chevrolet was traveling west on Route 37 when its driver failed to remain in his lane.

Police identified the driver as Zachariah J. Monroe, 29, of Massena.

According to the official report, Monroe’s vehicle crossed into the eastbound lane and collided with a 2025 Kenworth tractor-trailer.

The tractor-trailer was being driven by Quinn T. Benedict, 55, of Akwesasne, police said.

Local television coverage described the incident as a head-on collision involving the pickup-style passenger vehicle and the commercial truck.

Driver Taken to Massena Hospital

Monroe was transported by Akwesasne Ambulance Service to Massena Hospital.

State Police described his injuries as non-life-threatening.

Benedict was not injured in the crash, according to the police report.

Authorities did not release additional details about Monroe’s condition or the extent of the damage to either vehicle.

Traffic Tickets Issued Following Investigation

State Police said Monroe was issued traffic tickets following the preliminary investigation. The specific violations were not listed in the public release.

He is scheduled to appear in Massena Town Court at a later date.

The issuance of a traffic ticket is not a finding of guilt. Any allegations will be addressed through the court process.

What Police Have Confirmed

According to the New York State Police, investigators have confirmed the following:

  • The collision happened shortly after 8 a.m. July 8.
  • The crash occurred on State Highway 37 in Massena.
  • A westbound Chevrolet crossed into the eastbound lane.
  • The Chevrolet collided with a Kenworth tractor-trailer.
  • The Chevrolet driver suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
  • The tractor-trailer driver was not injured.
  • Traffic tickets were issued to the Chevrolet driver.

Police have not publicly stated whether weather, distraction, fatigue, speed or a medical emergency played a role in the collision.

Any claim about those possible factors would be speculation unless additional evidence is released.

Commercial-Truck Collisions Can Carry Serious Risks

Collisions involving tractor-trailers can be particularly dangerous because of the size and weight difference between commercial trucks and passenger vehicles.

In this case, the passenger-vehicle driver survived with injuries described as non-life-threatening. The tractor-trailer operator escaped injury.

The outcome could have been more severe. Drivers traveling on two-lane and divided highways should remain alert, avoid distractions and maintain a safe distance from large commercial vehicles.

Basic Highway Safety Reminders

Motorists can reduce their risk by following several basic precautions:

  1. Keep phones and other distractions out of reach.
  2. Stay centered within the travel lane.
  3. Avoid driving while tired or impaired.
  4. Leave additional stopping distance behind tractor-trailers.
  5. Reduce speed when visibility or road conditions worsen.
  6. Never attempt to pass unless the opposing lane is clearly visible and open.

Drivers who begin to feel tired, dizzy or ill should safely leave the roadway rather than trying to continue.

Investigation Based on Preliminary Findings

The information released by State Police represents the agency’s preliminary findings.

Crash investigations may include examinations of vehicle damage, roadway evidence, witness statements and other available information. Police may update their findings if new evidence becomes available.

The New York State Police announcement was published July 13, five days after the collision.

Conclusion

The July 8 Massena crash sent a 29-year-old driver to the hospital but caused no injuries to the tractor-trailer operator.

State Police say the passenger vehicle crossed into the opposing lane before the collision. Traffic tickets were issued, and the matter is expected to proceed in Massena Town Court.

Motorists should use this incident as a reminder to remain focused, rested and fully attentive behind the wheel. A momentary lane departure can put several lives at risk.

Residents with direct information about serious roadway incidents should contact the appropriate law-enforcement agency rather than posting unverified claims on social media.
