Mannion Announces $2.06M for Regional Mobile Command Centers

SYRACUSE, N.Y. — The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and Syracuse Police Department are set to receive a combined $2.062 million in federal funding for new mobile command centers, according to U.S. Rep. John Mannion.

Mannion announced the funding Oct. 1, saying the awards are part of Community Project Funding requests he advanced for Central New York and the Mohawk Valley. His congressional office said the money has now been formally awarded.

What the funding will support

According to Mannion’s office, the money will be used to purchase and equip mobile command centers for the two law-enforcement agencies. The Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office is expected to receive a new mobile command unit, while the Syracuse Police Department plans to replace its existing Mobile Command Post Bus.

Mobile command vehicles can be used during major emergencies, large public events, prolonged investigations and multi-agency responses. They can provide communications, workspace and coordination capacity at scenes where police and emergency personnel may be operating for extended periods.

“Our law enforcement professionals need proper support and resources to protect our communities and respond to emergencies,” Mannion said in the official release.

Part of broader federal project funding

The congressman’s office said the awards are among 15 Community Project Funding priorities he advanced in partnership with local governments and organizations across Central New York and the Mohawk Valley.

Community Project Funding allows members of Congress to request federal support for specific projects in their districts through the appropriations process.

Regional significance

Although the funding is directed to agencies in Onondaga County and Syracuse, major public-safety incidents in Central New York can involve mutual aid and coordination across county lines. Specialized command equipment can therefore have regional value during emergencies that bring together multiple departments.

The Syracuse area also serves as a regional center for transportation, health care, higher education and large public events, all of which can require coordinated emergency planning.

Funding has been formally awarded

Mannion’s congressional office said the $2.062 million has been formally awarded. The release did not provide a delivery date for the new vehicles or a timeline for when each command center will enter service.
