Inside the Veterans Miracle Center, Barry Feinman and his team are trying to make room for all the boxes. It’s one of the largest donations the Colonie organization has ever received. Each box contains winter coats – 5,000 in total.
“I got to tell you something. The first time they called us, it was 3,000 jackets. And then it went to 5,000,” said Feinman, the executive director of the Veterans Miracle Center.
The coats were made possible by Ocean State Job Lot and Bookwell Travel. Brian Gates is the founder of the online travel site, which has been donating thousands of meals to veterans.
They were recently at the Veterans Affairs in Manhattan when they heard about the Veterans Miracle Center.
“It’s just kind of a thing where we’re stronger together, and we’re going to get this situation straightened out,” Gates said.
He got in touch with the center and a few weeks later, two trailer loads of coats and hand sanitizers arrived. After unloading all the essential winter items, the distribution immediately got underway.
“A couple times a year, we’ve been contacted to be provided an opportunity for our Marines to feel supported and be welcomed into the community,” said Sgt. Maj. Rick Brennan, who oversees the Marines recruiting station for this region.
Brennan came to pick up several boxes of winter coats for his Marines serving this area, which he says will go along, especially for those not from around here.
“Some are born of this, and then some are just adjusting to it day by day as they climatize up here,” Brennan said.
Even after the initial distribution wave, the center still has thousands of coats to give away.
Feinman says this is available to all veterans and active-duty military and their families. All they have to is call the Veterans Miracle Center to make an appointment.
“We’ll get flooded with men and women who need jackets, and it’s going to be wonderful,” Feinman said.
