We are a nation of immigrants. A country of dreamers and success stories that can only happen in America.
Both sets of my grandparents immigrated from Europe. My father and mother both were the first generation to attend college in their families.
My sister and I both earned post-secondary degrees with successful careers in Education and Psychology. The story continues with our children.
Our immigration system is broken, but there is hope. Kamala Harris and Tim Walz are focused on solutions.
After the proposed bi-partisan immigration legislation failed in congress, due to Donald Trump’s interference, Biden administration announced rules that bar migrants from being granted asylum when U.S. officials deem that the southern border is overwhelmed. Since then, arrests for illegal border crossings have fallen.
“We can create an earned pathway to citizenship and secure our border,” Harris said at the DNC in August. “I will bring back the bipartisan border security bill that Trump killed, and I will sign it into law.” She is committed to making that bill or a new version of the law.
Harris, in Arizona this week reminded voters about her work as attorney general of California in confronting crime along the border. During an August rally in Glendale, outside Phoenix, she talked about helping to prosecute drug- and people-smuggling gangs that operated transnationally and at the border.
“If someone does not make an asylum request at a legal point of entry and instead crosses our border unlawfully, they will be barred from receiving asylum,” she said. “While we understand that many people are desperate to migrate to the United States, our system must be orderly and secure, and that is my goal.”
Let’s vote for Harris and Walz to secure our borders and develop an earned path to citizenship.
