“SOMETHING TO DO in the Community”

Recently there has been a lot of talk about what we collectively need to do to slow down the Trump Executive order juggernaut.   I was reviewing information that I had compiled back in my community organizing days, and found that it still seems relevant.   SO here Goes:

Today, community and civic involvement are more important than ever.  We can’t take for granted that someone else will take responsibility for governing, leading and looking after our community.

We recognize that we are the community and we Pledge collectively to lead it, nurture it and make it flourish.

I will vote in every election (national, state, local, school board) after becoming informed about the candidates positions.

I will volunteer for at least one civic project (i.e.g School programs Rescue Squad, Planning Board, Coaching, Scouts, Friends of the Library, Crime Watch.  I will attend at least one meeting of the Common Council or School Board each year.

 I will support local merchants.

When I have a criticism of the way things are run or hear a rumor-in local government or in the schools – I will take my concerns to the source rather than adding my voice to the negative perceptions that circulate in the community.

I recognize that people of different backgrounds are a bit different than me, which makes our community more interesting, I pledge to recognize our community and appreciate our differences especially at times of stress and discord.  I won’t use my ethnicity or theirs as a diving line.

I will look after my neighborhood and my neighbors.  I will become involved if I see a [problem-a crime, a pot hole.

I will get to know my neighbors and introduce myself to others.  I will talk up the good things about my community.
