Protect Public Education: Reject Linda McMahon’s Nomination
Dear Editor,
The nomination of Linda McMahon as Secretary of Education poses a serious threat to public education, particularly in the Mohawk Valley. Without experience in educational administration, her leadership could accelerate efforts to dismantle the U.S. Department of Education—an action that would devastate local schools, colleges, and the regional economy.
The Department of Education provides crucial funding for K-12 schools, enforces civil rights protections, and administers financial aid programs like Pell Grants and student loans. If abolished, students at Utica University, Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC), and SUNY Polytechnic Institute (SUNY Poly) would face skyrocketing tuition costs, leading to lower enrollment, staff layoffs, and fewer skilled workers for local industries. These institutions generate millions in economic activity, supporting businesses, healthcare providers, and manufacturers that depend on an educated workforce.
We cannot afford to let our education system be gutted. I urge residents to contact Senator Bill Cassidy, Chair of the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee, and demand he reject McMahon’s confirmation. Additionally, we must call our congressional representatives to protect the Department of Education. The future of our students, schools, and economy depends on it.
Protect Our Schools, Protect Our Future—Reject Linda McMahon’s Nomination!
Sincerely,
Dawn Laguerre
Utica, NY
