The political landscape shifted dramatically in July as the Joe Biden-turned-Kamala Harris campaign announced a staggering $310 million fundraising haul. This massive influx of cash was sparked by Vice President Kamala Harris’s entry into the presidential race, marking a significant turning point for the Democratic Party.
Record-Breaking Fundraising Achievements
Harris’s impressive fundraising efforts more than doubled the $137 million raised by former President Donald Trump, who recently headlined the Republican National Convention. According to figures released by both campaigns, Harris’s campaign and its affiliated committees now boast $377 million in cash on hand, a substantial $50 million advantage over Trump’s $327 million war chest.
The Harris campaign has already surpassed the $1 billion mark in total fundraising, achieving this milestone faster than any other campaign in history. With four months remaining until the election, these eye-popping totals have revitalized the financial prospects for Democrats, who had witnessed their financial advantage dwindle under President Biden.
Turning the Tide for Democrats

In May, President Trump’s substantial fundraising following his hush money felony convictions in New York wiped out the cash lead that President Biden had established. A challenging June debate for Biden, coupled with increasing calls from Democratic officials for him to step aside, led to a freeze in fundraising. Disillusioned major Democratic donors canceled fundraising events and withheld contributions, causing a downward revision in July’s fundraising projections.
However, the political landscape changed dramatically when President Biden announced his departure from the ticket on July 21, elevating Kamala Harris to lead the Democratic charge. This move reignited donor enthusiasm, prompting major Democratic contributors to pledge $150 million to a pro-Democratic presidential super PAC. Small-dollar donors also rushed to support Harris’s presidential campaign.
Engaging a Diverse and Enthusiastic Donor Base
A series of Zoom fundraisers, featuring hundreds of thousands of supporters and celebrity appearances, have proven highly effective. These coalition calls, which included groups such as Black Women for Harris, Latinas for Harris, and White Dudes for Harris, collectively raised over $20 million.
Notably, two-thirds of the July fundraising total came from first-time donors, with a majority of contributions being $200 or less. The Harris campaign has successfully attracted the support of Gen Z and millennial donors, demographics that President Biden struggled to engage.
“This is a history-making haul for a candidate who will make history this November,” stated Harris campaign manager Julie Chavez Rodriguez. “The tremendous outpouring of support we’ve seen in just a short time makes clear that the Harris coalition is mobilized, growing, and ready to put in the work to defeat Trump this November.”
