New Intensive Crisis Stabilization Center Launches in Central New York, Transforming Mental Health and Substance Use Care
Herkimer, NY — May 2026 — A new approach to behavioral health care is coming to Central New York with the launch of the Intensive Crisis Stabilization Center (ICSC) by the Neighborhood Center, one of only 12 such centers in New York State.
Designed to provide immediate, on-site care for individuals experiencing mental health or substance use crises, the ICSC offers stabilization services for up to 24 hours—helping individuals get the support they need quickly, safely, and close to home.
“This is about changing how we respond to crisis,” said Lisa Ferraro, Director. “Instead of defaulting to emergency rooms or law enforcement, we’re creating a space focused on compassionate, specialized care that meets people where they are.”
The center will serve individuals across Oneida, Herkimer, Schoharie, Otsego, Fulton, and Montgomery counties, expanding access to critical services in a region where demand for behavioral health support continues to grow.
In addition to improving care, the ICSC is also creating new opportunities for healthcare professionals across the region. The center is currently hiring:
- Registered Nurses (RNs)
- Nurse Practitioners
- Licensed Social Workers
- Substance Abuse Counselors
Multiple shifts are available, offering flexibility for professionals seeking meaningful, community-based work.
“At the ICSC, no two days will be the same,” said Ferraro. “Our team works with individuals of all ages—from children to older adults—making a real difference during some of the most critical moments in their lives.”
The launch of the ICSC represents a broader effort to strengthen the behavioral health system in New York State by reducing strain on emergency departments, improving outcomes, and ensuring individuals receive timely, appropriate care.
