A humanoid robot in New York classrooms will soon move from science fiction to a real-world education experiment. Beginning during the 2026-27 school year, Salamanca City Central School District plans to introduce an AI-powered robot named Sally into selected high school technology courses. District officials say Sally will support teachers, reinforce lessons and provide tutoring, but will not replace educators or make independent decisions about students.

The pilot program could offer students valuable experience with artificial intelligence and robotics. It will also test whether a human-looking machine can improve learning without weakening privacy, fairness or the relationships at the heart of education.

What Is the Salamanca Humanoid Robot Program?

Salamanca City Central School District is partnering with Realbotix Corp. to test a stationary humanoid robot and a related digital teaching assistant.

The robot will initially work with a small group of students enrolled in Woz ED Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics courses. Those classes focus on subjects such as coding, robotics and artificial intelligence.

Sally will not walk through the halls. Realbotix CEO Andrew Kiguel told New York Focus that the robot will remain seated but will be able to move its upper body, change facial expressions and hold conversations with students.

The district said the system has been loaded with:

  • District-approved curriculum
  • Instructional strategies
  • Local historical information
  • Safety rules for student interactions
  • Limits on topics the robot may discuss

The robot is expected to guide students through problems rather than simply supply answers.

“When students ask questions, the robot guides them through the learning process rather than completing the work for them,” the district said in its July 10 announcement.

How Much Will Sally Cost?

The district agreed to pay $57,590 for the robot and AI teaching assistant system, according to the contract attached to the school board agenda and reviewed by New York Focus.

Realbotix lists its M-Series robots at a starting price of about $95,000. Kiguel said Salamanca received a discounted price.

The purchase includes more than the physical robot. Students are also expected to have access to a digital avatar that can help them review district-approved material outside regular classroom hours.

That feature could provide homework help to students who cannot afford private tutoring. It could also assist students who need repeated explanations, translations or extra practice.

Still, the district will need to show that the investment produces measurable educational benefits. A robot may attract attention, but attention alone does not prove that students are learning more.

Sally Is Designed to Assist Teachers, Not Replace Them

District leaders have repeatedly rejected the idea that Sally will become a robot teacher.

“The Realbotix educational robot will never replace teachers, staff members, or meaningful human interaction,” the district said. “Teachers remain at the center of every learning experience.”

Superintendent Mark Beehler has described the system as a classroom tool rather than a substitute for professional educators.

“We truly believe in the importance of human-to-human interaction,” Beehler said. “It is not going to replace teachers.”

That distinction matters.

Teachers do more than explain facts. They recognize frustration, encourage shy students, resolve conflicts and understand the personal circumstances affecting a child’s performance. A machine can present information, but it cannot carry the full social and emotional responsibility of a trained educator.

The strongest version of Salamanca’s experiment will therefore place teachers in control of every major decision.

How the District Says Student Privacy Will Be Protected

School technology often collects more information than families realize. Salamanca officials appear to be responding to those concerns before the robot enters regular classroom use.

According to the district, the Realbotix system:

  • Will not collect personally identifiable information
  • Will not record video or audio
  • Will not transmit student data to Realbotix
  • Will not use facial recognition
  • Will not search the open internet
  • Will operate under district policies and New York privacy rules

The robot will use locally stored educational content. When it receives a question outside its approved knowledge base, the district says it will answer that it does not know rather than inventing information.

Students may use identification codes when working with the system. Those codes could allow the program to remember earlier academic conversations and provide more personalized help without addressing students by name.

These protections sound promising, but families should still receive clear answers about several issues:

  1. What information is connected to each student code?
  2. How long will learning records be retained?
  3. Who inside the district can view student interactions?
  4. How will parents report incorrect or troubling responses?
  5. Will an outside expert audit the system’s privacy claims?
  6. Can families decline participation without harming a student’s grade?

Public trust will depend on written policies, not simply verbal assurances.

Why Salamanca Is Testing Classroom AI

Salamanca serves roughly 1,300 students in Cattaraugus County. About 79 percent are economically disadvantaged, and approximately 32 percent identify as American Indian or Alaska Native, according to figures reported by New York Focus. The city is located within the Allegany Territory of the Seneca Nation.

Supporters say the pilot could give students in a rural district access to technology that is often concentrated in wealthier schools, universities and private companies.

The potential benefits include:

  • Around-the-clock access to approved tutoring material
  • Hands-on experience with robotics and AI
  • Additional support for teachers
  • Help for students who need concepts repeated
  • Translation and language assistance
  • Exposure to careers in software, engineering and automation

Beehler has argued that schools should teach students how to use AI responsibly instead of assuming they can keep it outside the classroom.

“Many schools are taking the easy solution of simply banning it,” he said. “I also believe it is critical for schools to teach proper use of technology, not simply exclude it.”

That argument has merit. Students will encounter AI in college, employment and daily life. Schools have a responsibility to teach them how to question automated answers, identify errors and use the technology ethically.

Could Classroom AI Reduce or Increase Inequality?

The equity question cuts both ways.

A district-owned AI tutor could give lower-income students access to assistance that wealthier families purchase privately. Realbotix has promoted the system as a way to make tutoring available at any hour.

However, technology can also widen inequality when it is introduced without enough staff training, reliable internet access or independent oversight.

UNESCO has warned that artificial intelligence in education can create new privacy, safety and equity problems. The organization recommends a human-centered approach that protects student rights and ensures technology strengthens learning rather than leaving vulnerable students further behind.

Local culture must also remain central. Because a significant share of Salamanca students are Indigenous, district leaders should involve Seneca families, educators and cultural experts in reviewing the content used by the robot.

An AI system should not flatten local history into a generic textbook summary. It should not misrepresent Indigenous knowledge or treat the community as an afterthought.

A locally controlled curriculum could reduce that danger, but only if community members have a meaningful role in deciding what is included.

Teachers and Parents Are Asking for Caution

Salamanca’s program arrives as educators across New York debate the appropriate role of AI and screens in schools.

In May 2026, New York State United Teachers called for stricter limits on student-facing AI and classroom screen time. The union said AI use involving students should be developmentally appropriate and supervised by educators.

Those recommendations do not call for eliminating all technology. Instead, they emphasize balance.

Salamanca is starting with high school students in specialized technology courses, not very young children. That narrower approach may reduce some concerns. Older students are better prepared to discuss how AI systems work, why they make mistakes and how commercial technology can shape behavior.

One local parent, Sierra Abrams, told New York Focus that the program raised concerns because the community already faces serious environmental and social challenges. Her reaction shows why the district must treat family engagement as part of the pilot, not as a public relations task after decisions have been made.

How Salamanca Can Measure Whether Sally Works

A successful classroom pilot should be judged by evidence, not novelty.

The district should publish clear goals before expanding the program. Those goals could include:

  • Changes in student understanding of coding and robotics
  • Assignment completion rates
  • Student participation
  • Teacher workload
  • Frequency of incorrect responses
  • Privacy or safety incidents
  • Student and parent satisfaction
  • Differences in outcomes among student groups

The district should also compare results with similar classes that do not use the humanoid robot.

A fair evaluation must ask whether Sally provides benefits beyond less expensive options, such as additional tutoring, teacher aides, software subscriptions or expanded after-school programs.

The robot’s appearance may create excitement at first. The real question is whether that excitement becomes sustained learning.

A Classroom Experiment Worth Watching Carefully

Salamanca’s decision is bold, but bold does not automatically mean wise or reckless. The outcome will depend on how the district manages the program.

The humanoid robot could help students explore technology, receive extra academic support and prepare for a changing workforce. It could also become an expensive distraction if the district does not measure results or listen to families.

The right approach is neither blind enthusiasm nor automatic fear.

Parents, teachers and students should ask for regular public reports on Sally’s accuracy, use, costs and educational impact. District leaders should explain how student information is handled and allow independent review of the system’s safeguards.

Above all, Salamanca must keep its central promise: technology may support the classroom, but human educators must remain in charge.

The rest of New York should watch this pilot closely. If Sally succeeds, the district may help establish a responsible model for classroom AI. If problems emerge, schools elsewhere should learn from them before inviting similar machines into their own classrooms.
