Hot Seat: Media Monday S2:E48: Nolan Hyman, United Games, Latino Festival & Royal Roots and Rhythms
Lily Christopher joins Ron Klopfanstein as co-host for an hour focused on local journalism, cultural pride and people bringing the Mohawk Valley community together.
The episode begins with Christopher’s report from the United Way of the Mohawk Valley’s United Games at F.T. Proctor Park. She speaks with organizers, participants and members of the Utica Royalties dance team about community involvement and helping others overcome barriers. Christopher also interviews New York State Senator Joseph Griffo about the work of the United Way and the importance of creating positive community experiences.
WKTV reporter and producer Nolan Hyman then joins Klopfanstein and Christopher in the studio. Hyman discusses beginning his television news career in the community where he grew up, what a typical day in a local newsroom looks like and how reporters prepare for rapidly developing assignments. He also explains the responsibility of covering court proceedings accurately and the importance of giving viewers the context they need to understand a story.
In Segment 2, Klopfanstein and Christopher take viewers inside the Mohawk Valley Latino Association’s 20th Annual Latino Festival at Hanna Park. Their report captures the music, movement, food and family atmosphere of the celebration as they meet people representing cultures from across Latin America.
Hyman continues the conversation about covering local news, building trust and finding meaningful stories in his hometown.
The final segment features Howard Peters of Utica Royalties with a preview of the Royal Roots and Rhythms Festival. The free community celebration at Y Park brings together music, dance, culture and family activities.
