While there’s no lack of cavorting during the St Patrick’s Day celebration by the members and families of members of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and the Utica St. Patrick’s Day Parade, the religious aspect of the observance dominates for the Hibernians.

On the day prior to the Utica Parade, the Hibernians traditionally hold a memorial Mass in honor of the patron saint of the “Auld Sod.” This year’s Mass, held at the traditional site, St. Joseph/St. Patrick Church on Columbia St., drew one of the largest turnouts in the recent history of the event.
Members of both the men’s John C. Devereux Division #1 of Oneida County and the LAOH Oneida County Div.#17, Utica, NY, swelled the number of worshippers. A welcoming “homily” or sermon by Fr. John Cannoro, greeted one and all.
A rousing version of “When Irish Eyes are Smiling” served as the Mass “recessional hymn,” which inspired a nearly universal “sing along” by the two attending clubs and their families.

After the Mass, many Mass-goers repaired to the nearby Irish Cultural Center and Five Points Pub for a wee bit of fellowship.
