“Soul food is one of the things I love to do,” Marques Williams told listeners on the March 25, 2024, episode of The Hot Seat on 95.5 FM Utica Phoenix Radio, “The Heat.” I was one of those people who always wanted to stay in the kitchen. What I found interesting is how my mom could clean the chicken, season the chicken, she would have the meat marinate over time…then seeing the process. Then, having fun in the kitchen. You always gotta have fun in the kitchen.”
Marques Williams shares that fun with the Utica University community through his cooking show, IS IT ON. He demonstrates recipes that his classmates can copy using accessible ingredients and methods.
“I find joy in doing this,” he says. “My mom, she would always cook dinner for the holidays. I like that feeling. I like it when people enjoy my food.”
Marques Williams is a sophomore at Utica University. He is a member of the Student Senate and vice president of a new organization called Brothers On a New Direction. This community service group recognizes the need for unity by men of color. He got involved with these organizations because of his passion for helping others. He was particularly concerned for others who were experiencing food insecurity and is using his leadership role to support the university’s food pantry.
