Despite the early adverse weather conditions with pouring rain and wind knocking down tents and displayed, over 2,500 parents, children and community leaders attended the annual Harvest on the Hill event.

The event was the brainchild of Senora Pierce, a doctoral candidate. It initially started in 2014 with not much support from government or municipalities. It took place starting at the corner of Oneida and James Street and continued through the Corn Hill area.
Senora Pierce created this event so the local kids would have a safe place to trick-or-treat while allowing their parents to have networking opportunities and reconnect with old friends and embrace family values.
Parade
The New Jersey ROTC group from Proctor, Junior Frontiers, and Rebuild the Village, along with local Corn Hill youth, kicked off the parade honoring Corn Hill’s community leader, Patrick Johnson.

Displays
ICAN presented their Snug Prevention program where they discussed alternatives to violence.
Mosaic Health provided resources to discuss mental health.
Law enforcement agencies bonded with the residents. It was a day when the Utica Police Department and Fire Department cooked wonderful meals and bonded with the communities and described their presence in the neighborhood and what their jobs do.
Music
Local DJs blasted music from street corners.
Academic Opportunities
Students had an opportunity to meet with academic groups and discuss academic enrichments, programs, tutoring, and opportunities. They met with Young Scholars and OnPoint For College to discuss future vocational or college goals.

Politicians
Several politicians, including Senator John Manion, Assemblywoman Marianne Buttenschon, and Senatorial candidate James Myers from Rome, were among the crowd. They handed out candy and discussed the importance of citizenship. Kids were afforded a real-life opportunity to witness the political process. They were allowed to cast their ballots for their favorite candy. Over 596 kids looked at a paper ballot and voted for their favorite candy. It was Skittles, which beat out the past favorite chocolate candies like Snickers.

Costumes
Costumes were creative and there were a ton of folks wearing superhero costumes, lots of Spider-Man, Wednesday from the Addams Family, the Lion Kings, anime costumes, and etc.
Buffalo Soldiers
Kids got to see the Buffalo Soldiers on their motorcycles riding down the street.
Food
Kids were treated to hot dogs, hamburgers, popcorn, and pizzas. Jay Catering provided a soulful blend of food.
Creative Activities
Munson was there to provide art opportunities, the Utica Zoo.
Overall, it was just a great event had by all.
