Hamilton College Philosophy Professor Marianne Janack, recipient of the 2017-2018 Romanell-Phi Beta Kappa Professorship, will give a lecture, “Reading, Writing and Pleasure,” on Friday, Aug. 31, at 4:15 p.m., in the All-Night Reading Room in Burke Library on the Hamilton College campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Many of us read simply for pleasure, though we also sometimes read for information, or to be persuaded. This talk will be about reading experiences and about philosophical writing.
Janack was awarded the Romanell Professorship for her proposed lecture series on the alleged uselessness of philosophy, its literary possibilities and its shifting history. This is the third and final lecture in the series.
The Romanell-Phi Beta Kappa Professorship is awarded annually to scholars in the field of philosophy, without restriction to any one school of philosophical thought. The professorship recognizes not only distinguished achievement but also the recipient’s contribution or potential contribution to public understanding of philosophy.
