A Wedding Day Cut Short: The Tragedy of Dave and Jesni Fiji
When Joy Becomes Grief in an Instant
A couple’s wedding night helicopter crash in rural Georgia claimed the groom’s life and left the bride fighting for survival, raising urgent questions about weather decisions, flight safety, and the price of a dream sendoff.
When a Dream Wedding Turned to Nightmare in Georgia
Dave Fiji had dreamed of flying since he was ten years old. On the night of Friday, May 29, 2026, that dream and the greatest day of his life were supposed to collide in a moment of pure joy. Instead, a Robinson R66 helicopter carrying the 25-year-old newlywed and his bride, Jesni, crashed into a densely wooded area of Dawson County, Georgia, just minutes after they lifted off from their wedding venue. Dave and the pilot, Nikhil Nargundkar, were killed. Jesni survived, trapped alone in the wreckage for nearly six hours, her new husband’s body resting against her. The Fiji family’s helicopter crash is now the subject of a federal investigation and a heartbreaking reminder that tragedy does not wait for joy to end.
A Perfect Wedding, Then Silence
George and Pheba Fiji watched their son exchange vows with the woman he loved in front of nearly 400 guests at The Revere, a premier wedding and special events venue near Dawsonville, Georgia. By every account, the evening had been flawless.
“We could say it was a perfect wedding,” his father, George Fiji, told WSB-TV Channel 2 Atlanta. “We couldn’t ask for anything more.”
His mother, Pheba Fiji, recalled a spiritual atmosphere at the ceremony. “Both of them could sense the presence of God at the altar, a tangible presence of God,” she said. “There was a special glow and glory over his face that we couldn’t explain. And it was just not just us who noticed.”
Dave and Jesni had known each other for nearly a decade. They met through New Testament Church, a connection that began in South Carolina and grew into something deeper over the years. As George described them, they were “friends who decided to become life partners.” Their faith was at the center of their relationship from the very beginning.
Around 9:30 p.m., as celebrations wound down, the couple prepared to board a helicopter bound for DeKalb-Peachtree Airport, where a hotel stay in downtown Atlanta awaited them. The helicopter package was part of the wedding arrangement provided by Prestige Helicopters, which operates out of the same airport.
Weather Warning Ignored Before Takeoff
Here is where the story takes a devastating turn.
As rain and fog moved into the area, concerns were raised about whether it was safe to fly. Dave Fiji, himself a trained first officer for Endeavor Air, a regional subsidiary of Delta Air Lines, voiced those concerns directly.
“Since my son was a pilot, he told the pilot that there is zero visibility, and when there is zero visibility like this, we never fly,” George Fiji recounted to Fox News, relaying the exchange through Jesni.
But the pilot from Prestige Helicopters expressed confidence that the flight could be completed safely. According to Pheba Fiji, the pilot suggested climbing to a higher altitude would clear the weather concerns, even as rain had already started. Dave, who did not fly helicopters professionally and had deferred to the pilot’s expertise, ultimately trusted the assessment.
“With his confidence, and since Dave doesn’t fly helicopters, he went with his perspective of being able to make them, since it’s just a 20- to 25-minute flight,” Pheba told FOX 5 Atlanta.
The aircraft lifted off and disappeared into the night. The family never heard from Dave again.
Six Hours Alone in the Dark
The Robinson R66 went down in a remote, 10,000-acre wooded tract southwest of Dawsonville, land owned by the City of Atlanta and managed by the state as a wildlife management area. The helicopter struck tall trees before crashing to the ground, according to early details from the National Transportation Safety Board. There was no fire after impact.
Jesni was knocked unconscious on impact. When she woke, it was to a scene no one should ever have to face.
“She said when she woke up, she saw my son Dave resting on her bosom,” George Fiji told Fox News. “She saw blood on him, and by then his body was completely cold. She’s a nurse, so she knew he was gone.”
Jesni remained trapped beneath debris for nearly six hours before emergency crews from the Dawson County Sheriff’s Office, along with local fire and EMS agencies, located the crash site and pulled her to safety. She was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, where she was treated for cuts and bruises. Remarkably, she suffered no broken bones.
“She’s devastated, but slowly, slowly she’s getting better,” George told reporters.
Meanwhile, back at the wedding venue, the family had grown frantic. George had texted and called his son repeatedly, receiving no response after the helicopter took off.
“We were trying to reach Dave, we texted him, called him so many times; we didn’t get any response after the helicopter was sent off,” he said.
A Young Aviator Gone Too Soon
Dave Fiji was just 25 years old. He had joined Endeavor Air as a first officer in March 2025, based in Atlanta. His family traced its roots to Kerala, India. Those who knew him described a young man of extraordinary character.
“He was a precious child, he was a gift from God for us,” his father said. “He was a God-fearing child. So handsome, beautiful.”
A friend wrote on Facebook that Dave was “a bright, kind and remarkable young man” who was “gone far too soon.”
Endeavor Air released a formal statement mourning his loss. “It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of Endeavor First Officer Dave Fiji,” the airline wrote. “Dave tragically lost his life in a helicopter accident on Friday, May 29, shortly after celebrating his wedding. The loss of a colleague and friend is deeply felt, and we know this news may be especially difficult for those who knew and worked alongside him.”
The pilot, identified by the Dawson County coroner as Nikhil Nargundkar, also died in the crash. As of publication, little additional information about him has been released publicly.
NTSB Leading Federal Investigation
The National Transportation Safety Board dispatched an investigator to the scene and is now leading the formal investigation. Federal investigators are examining:
-
The wreckage itself for mechanical failures or structural issues
-
Weather conditions at the time of flight, including visibility and precipitation data
-
Air traffic control communications and radar information from the moments before the crash
-
Maintenance records for the Robinson R66 helicopter
-
The pilot’s background, training, and flight hours
-
Any video or surveillance footage from the area, which investigators have publicly requested
The NTSB has not yet issued a probable cause finding. The investigation is expected to take months.
The helicopter was owned by Prestige Helicopters, which operates out of Peachtree-DeKalb Airport. The company has not made a public statement.
This crash follows a broader pattern of helicopter incidents across the United States. Safety advocates and aviation experts have long pointed to low-altitude, poor-weather flights as among the highest-risk scenarios for light helicopter operations. The decision to fly in conditions of low visibility remains a critical issue in general aviation safety.
Faith as a Foundation in Unimaginable Grief
In the days following the crash, the Fiji family has held onto their Christian faith as the only solid ground beneath them.
“Without God there would be many questions: why?” George Fiji said. “God granted us a perfect wedding, and within a few hours everything changed into tragedy. The only place we can find answers and peace is in God.”
“Our job was to bring him up in the ways of God,” he added. “I believe God has given us grace to do that. And when He saw him fit, He took him home.”
Jesni, who is expected to be released from the hospital in the coming days, is described by her late husband’s family as a woman of tremendous strength and love. “She always says there could never be a man who preserved himself like David did,” George shared. “He was kind, he was gentle, he was selfless. Those were her words.”
As Jesni begins life as a widow mere days after becoming a wife, the Fiji family asks for continued prayers and support. Funeral arrangements for Dave are currently being planned.
